Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 07, 2010 2:06 am Hi All, We are looking at trying to pack quite a few fruit trees into a relatively small area. Therefore, we are considering using a cordon form (45 degree angle) as I've read that you can plant 90cm apart, trees are smaller, one of the most productive forms and easy for the beginner. The only drama is you are limited in which trees will fruit using this form. Apples, pears and any other spur bearers are OK, but apparently tip bearers will not fruit. I'm curious to know if anyone else has planted using this form and could recommend apple, pear and possibly plum varieties that will do OK in Perth? Thanks, Chris Re: Anyone planted fruit trees using a cordon form 2Nov 09, 2010 12:19 am Chris I'll need to get back to you on good metro verieties but Toparious is the man to PM or answer in this thread. Also get over to the Great Gardens forum and post up for Peter Coppin to throw an answer up for you as well Re: Anyone planted fruit trees using a cordon form 3Nov 09, 2010 1:07 am Hey Fu, Done and done! Thanks for that. If you do find any metro varietes, then please let me know. I think for apples, I am looking at pinkabelle at the moment. They are supposed to be a dwarfing form, and I guess they'll do alright with a cordon form. However, I always find pink ladys just a little bit tart, so I was hoping for something a bit sweeter. My fav is Red Delicious, but I don't know if it can be grown in Perth. As for pears and plums....I know nothing Thanks again, Chris Re: Anyone planted fruit trees using a cordon form 4Nov 09, 2010 1:12 am Yeah, I try to get onto it tomorrow for you Now just because a nursery sells a variety of fruit tree doesn't mean it is suitable for your area. Many wouldn't have a clue. They just sell them because they can. Wandilla nursery is a ripper for fruiting plants but be armed with some info first There's a good nursery up in the hills somewhere too and I'm sure Peter will say where for you. Maybe it was a citrus nursery? I can't recall I couldn't attached the photo for some reason.
