Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 03, 2010 8:52 am Hi all, So, my veggie patch is literally jumping out of the ground. I cant believe how much growth I have had in the last 3 weeks. Its amazing. My beans that I planted have almost tripled in size, and I have put a stake behind them. They have these little curly feeler things that look like they are searching for something to hold onto. I tried wrapping them round the stake but they eventually come off. I did some research and these feeler things look for something and guide the plant up it. They are wrapping around themselves and around my mulch, I cant get them to climb the stake. Am I guiding them too early? They are still only about 15cms high. Cheers. Re: Getting beanstalks to climb 2Nov 03, 2010 9:09 am For my peas I use 3 bamboo stakes tied together near the top to form a tripod. I then use the twist tie stuff attaching it to the stakes and spiraling it up around the tripod. The peas then are support and have lots to grab onto Re: Getting beanstalks to climb 4Nov 03, 2010 9:49 am I start the twist tie stuff (near horizontal between the stakes) low down which the peas rest against - this was easier given the triangular 'cage' around the plant and they soon attach themselves with or with out my assistance Re: Getting beanstalks to climb 5Nov 03, 2010 10:24 am Ok awesome. How soon do you begin to guide them. Do you think Im to early..or do I wait until its a bit more of a vine and start wrapping it around the stake. The twist ties things, are they the ones u use in the kitchen or special thingy's? Re: Getting beanstalks to climb 8Nov 03, 2010 10:48 pm Go get some cheap wire mesh with big square holes in it. Roll it into a cylinder and bung it around each bean They will climb happily through it and the holes will be big enough for you to shove your hand through it Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home. Visit for… 1 15762 How much are you ahead in payments compared to where the build is at?
