My friend, google took me to a few sites where it was studied at the Charles Sturt Uni and it apparently had some great results. Im honestly thinking of giving this a go. I spose its not going to hurt........What do u think Re: White Sugar for weed control 4Oct 26, 2010 7:47 pm I'd imagine it probably does something similar to the molasses that Fu recommends ? I would say its exactly what they both do... send the microbes crazy which in turn locks up the nitrates in the soil, this staves the weeds and then allows native plants to grow. Im no expert though... so Fu may be able to confirm if Im rght or not ......as for the ants they dont go for it if its being diluted/watered in. I found it when I was looking for ways to get rid of weeds and I thought of molasses straight away so I googled that and weeds......it didnt come up with anything about the molasses controlling the weeds but on one site it said use them both, the white sugar for the weeds (cos it starves the weeds of nutrients) and the molasses for the microbes in the soil. Will have to try and find the link again. Re: White Sugar for weed control 9Oct 26, 2010 10:48 pm Good find. Yes that is what it is about. The reason why in commercial turf trials sugar is used is because of cost. In very large volumes, sugar is sometimes cheaper than molasses. For domestic gardeners, molasses is far cheaper Re: White Sugar for weed control 10Oct 26, 2010 10:50 pm Do you think Molasses would do the same thing though Fu. Re: White Sugar for weed control 11Oct 26, 2010 11:02 pm Of course but it isn't as simple as you might think. Both sugar and molasses are not going to work like round up or something. It is about restoring the balance more than anything. It is slow but in time, the lawn or plants will become far stronger and healthier than the weeds and that is what gets the results A bit like hearing someone say, a vitamin pill made them feel better, but it was really also all the healthy exercise that has more to do with it. Re: White Sugar for weed control 12Oct 26, 2010 11:07 pm It has me sold. I dont like the idea of using the chemicals so figure this will be more beneficial and in time the results will work. Will keep you posted. Thanks Re: White Sugar for weed control 13Oct 26, 2010 11:30 pm Again, it won't do it alone. It will also be about mowing without a catcher, using smaller more frequent waterings, mulching garden beds heavily with straws and green fresh tree mulch.100mm thick is what it should be. Using the molasses is going to put in place an excellent microbe population that will break down the clippings. Traditionally it is said not do this. That is because when using chemical fertilisers the way we have been conditioned to do, it makes such an unhealthy soil ecosystem that there isn't anything to break down the clippings and that then causes thatch It will also mean the soil is not exposed as much which in turn makes for less opportunity for weeds to take hold The clippings will return a perfect nutrient balance back to the soil Programme your retic controller to do three three minute cycles round all your stations and have the first station start just after the last one would finish. So say you have 8 stations, have the next cycle start 25 mins after the first started and so on Less water still, yet far better results Re: White Sugar for weed control 14Oct 27, 2010 12:08 am Thanks Fu. We really are so lucky to have you on h1 Re: White Sugar for weed control 15Oct 27, 2010 10:01 am So does this mean weeds are diabetic ! Cheers Cozmo ______________________________ Building a PD Heywood 29 http://fromevetoeternity.blogspot.com/ Re: White Sugar for weed control 17Oct 27, 2010 11:00 am Oh and I should mention re: The watering schedule, the three minutes is only relative to the conventional junk popups and micro sprays and shrub heads many have. These are very inefficient and watering times promoted by the Warer Corp here in WA are based around those systems. If you have MP rotators and sub mulch irrigation them watering times are far greater because the water is applied much slower The same concept will be very workable with these systems as well, just over 10mins instead Re: White Sugar for weed control 18Oct 31, 2010 1:08 pm Can I sugar/molasses my entire lawn (too many weeds to do just spot areas ) or will I kill the lawn too? I read the link, but haven't grasped how this method only kills the weeds and not the grass ...or will it? Re: White Sugar for weed control 19Oct 31, 2010 10:14 pm Just use molasses.
