But I have a couple of questions: How do I put mulch 10cm deep around a plant which is only 5cm tall? How close do I put it to the plant? How do I stop the plant getting buried by mulch blown on top of it? (happened twice now. may have had some help from neighbourhood dogs. But they're all getting mulch blown on top of them to some degree. I'm not even anywhere particularly windy, just sandy treeless suburbia.) Re: Mulch depth and distances 2Oct 25, 2010 1:07 pm Dont stress too much, it will be fine. Try and leave a ring around it where the soil is exposed, so the roots can breathe. The 5cms should grow quite rapidly. if you have a coke bottle, cut the bottom off and put it ontop of the plant whilst you mulch. This should work a treat if the plant is that small. Just keep an eye on it, the mulch shouldn't blow around enough to bury the plant. I regularly have to pull back mulch from the base of my trees, but there are a few plants that i cant get in between and they have been fine. The mulch is probably really thin around there anyway so its having the same affect as having none at all. Re: Mulch depth and distances 3Oct 26, 2010 12:11 am The plants just need their stems clear. The roots will breath just fine and better covered with mulch The mulch needs to be watered in with a strong jet of water from a nozzle or it is going to blow around everywhere. Straw is the same. As for the plants 5cm behind mulch 10cm. They will disappear for a bit. However they will grow rapidly as they will have a more stable soil temp, an improved microbe population providing them with yummy nutrients. They will be protected from wind. The mulch will compost at the soil surface and begin to be consumed by the micro organisms and form new soils and provide nutrients for plant growth better than any fertiliser ever will. So the mulch height will drop quite a bit over the next 4-6 weeks. You will be amazed And where does it go? Into the soil and into your plants via the micro organisms you are allowing to flourish Sometimes you can wet the mulch a bit and then press and mould it around the plants to firm it all up. Then hose in really thoroughly again. It won't blow around... unless you have pine bark, wood chips or black designer mulch. that s$%t will blow everywhere! The distance between my DEBs varies from 4.1m at the narrowest to 8.1m at the widest. 5 25913 Hi, only for walking.
