maple in queensland?

Hi all,

I had a beautiful Japanese maple in Sydney and was wondering if they do well in Brisbane? If not, what is something similar I could use that has lots of colour, we're on acreage so mess doesn't bother me.

Got one also….they do best with morning sun and afternoon shade.

Get one, but make sure you plant it in the right position.

I think I called mine a Chines Maple…but your right their Japanese Maples.

Chinese maple and Japanese maples are two different trees.
They might not like the hot humid summer in Brisbane.

buy a small one and have a go.
not to much to lose from it.

Someone told a guy he'd never grow a comercial Mango crop here in Perth and he did it.

People have pulled off some fantastic tropical gardens in Melbourne too.

get into it.

I would keep it under the patio and away from summer sun.

Acerage in Brissy, so your going to be a bit hot and dry no doubt, or are you down the bay way?
So as FMC says; find the coldest spot for it.

Steve, we're building at Spring Mountain (Greenbank). Half way between Brissie and Gold coast although we are west a bit. It get's very hot, normally by January I am begging my husband to move back to Sydney!! Never be able to afford acreage there!

We have about 10 large gum trees in the middle of our block so I think I might try it down there where it will get some shade, or up towards the house where it gets the afternoon shade. I'm not a good garnener (read..kill everything) so this will be my one project, all other plants must fend for themselves :evil:

I can't believe there's a forum just for maples! I like them, but some of those posts are just so extreme. Calling them their babies and naming them!! I just don't want to kill the first one I plant, not induct it into the family. :lol:

Jet,

I'm all for having ago and being positive in our efforts at everything we do, but I reckon you're pushing the proverbial uphill with a rather pointy and hmmm pretty short stick. :shock:

It can get pretty darn hot in that area - (and yes cold mornings sometimes) as I used to use it as a shortcut when I was on the road doing service calls -the old Beenliegh council to the Amberley Airforce base next please.

Check out the temperature range at this link and click on the all available option and you will be able to work out if the maples going to work 4U.

Id' say your a fair way out maple zone and as you say - you're a bit green thumb challenged - will it work?

Maybe leaving the maple till you get back to NSW wil be more rewarding.

My thoughts.
