Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 17, 2010 6:30 am hi , im need some suggestions for the type of brick and concrete retaining wall that i'm thinking of building.what i propose is instead of a concrete footing is to bore holes about 6 feet apart about 3 feet deep then fill with concrete and starter bars then construct a double brick wall with a cavity on the pylons and dirt between. then i will fill cavity with steel mesh and concrete.the wall will only be about 3 feet high at its highest and i will provide proper drainage before i backfill. what i'd like to know is will this type of constuction fail. im a bricklayer and sometimes concretor an im trying to cut my material cost a little Re: retaining wall construction 2Oct 17, 2010 7:07 am Sounds like you are building the wall on ground which slopes along with the wall?? To me, the deep strong piers which you are thinking of doing would only be required on a sloping / unstable ground, but I am NO expert in this area. You didn't mention what would be the base for the wall (apart from where it's lieing on those piers). What would the wall need to retain - how much of soil and what type of soil? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: retaining wall construction 3Oct 18, 2010 4:48 am HI ,I'm just want to level up my back yard so there will not be to much load on it . the base of the wall would just sit on the dirt and the pylons after the grass has been removed and the soil to be retained will be a mix of soil and clay and the wall will only be about 3 feet at it highest point Re: retaining wall construction 4Oct 18, 2010 1:32 pm Mate I am looking at an egineers spec for a conc block wall with rodded concrete infill, and up to 1m high the spec is full length conc footing 600x300 with plenty of reo bar and ties, also reo bar vertically through the wall and horizontal every second bed course, corner ties etc. Weep holes every2.0m centres. No way would a double brick wall on sand be OK. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5108 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16048 Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria.
