Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 09, 2010 4:18 pm I live in Perth and have a large established hibiscus. I have just noticed that it has significant damage. The bark seems to have been eaten away.... do you know anything that would do that. Lots of the bark is missing, especially around any joints. It looks rough at the edges as if it has been chewed. The only other thought was, we have had two cats move in next door, would they use it as a scratching post.... I don't know anything about cats. Would appreciate any ideas Thanks Have been trying to attach photo, but not working sorry Re: Hibiscus bark , being eaten or damaged Fu Help! 2Oct 09, 2010 6:06 pm To attach a photo, check in the homeone forum further down the table. You will need an external photo sharing website like flickr. As for what might be causing it, my guess would be a beetle or weevil which would be strong enough to chomp the nutrient rich bark in the axils of the leaves and stems. How do you stop them? Well it may well be a case of having to use a systemic insecticide dare I even say it. Although I don't feel it is a call to take seriously till you see the culprits at work. They will be active at night and you'll need to ninja sneak up on them with a torch and a torch with red film over it is better still You'd be like a Commando More often than not than not the plant will recover fine and the bugs will move on when they are good and ready Re: Hibiscus bark , being eaten or damaged Fu Help! 3Oct 09, 2010 6:07 pm It could also be cats but the answer for that is one I am not allowed to post They make good fertiliser (I would imagine ) Re: Hibiscus bark , being eaten or damaged Fu Help! 4Oct 09, 2010 6:40 pm Thanks so much. I will do the commando routine tonight and with any luck will find a cat!!! The only thing that put me off thinking it was a beetle was that only the upper part of the branch was affected, never the lower (underneath) part. I'll be out there with my red torch tonight though to find out. Thanks for your advice Re: Hibiscus bark , being eaten or damaged Fu Help! 5Oct 09, 2010 7:11 pm Cool please let us all know what you find, or if you find it. I hope you do.
