Although we have been busy with family & work, we are slowly getting things done! Summer saw good harvests of tomatoes, zucchinis, beans, garlic, raspberries, strawberries, apricots, nectarines and a few apples. We also enjoyed salads from leaves grown in the garden.. Recently I have harvested pumpkins and potatoes, plus we have pulled out the summer vegies to prepare for the autumn/winter crops. There are a few late apples nearly ready and we have sown carrots, beetroot and various greens recently....the strawberry beds have been shifted and replanted. We found that they were too far away from the house and have relocated them near the vegie garden. We are in the process of strewing straw on all garden beds-most of which have now been marked out/constructed. Next weekend will see us fencing off the vegie garden to allow the chooks to freerange through the orchard-organic pest control! I plan to add another 3 hens to the 9 we currently have. I'm also posting away on my blog if anyone wants to come visit! http://sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com.au/ Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 203Apr 25, 2012 9:06 pm How are going with your girls ie how many eggs do you get a day. We thought our 4 would be perfect but since then, our egg consumption has increased significantly and laying has slowed. some days we have gotten no eggs. Would like to get some more girls but that would require construction of a larger home. We have 12 hens and at present lucky to get 3-4 eggs a day. Basically less daylight = less eggs which is why battery hens are kept in fluoro lit sheds to fool them into laying. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 205Apr 25, 2012 9:12 pm We have 4 laying ATM...Millie is moulting, BB, Lucy, Lexie & Lucky are all still too young to be laying just yet-which is why we got them at this time of the year. Ruby, Roxy & Rusty are also moulting, but being ISA browns they will basically lay through the moult-whereas the heritage varieties cease laying during moult. Some people suggest dry cat food to encourage laying-the hens need lots of protein to help them cope with growing the new feathers. All the chook forums swear by sardines / pilchards for their oily goodness in assisting with protein boosts. As well as bandsaw dust from butchers when they cut the bones up - but this freaks me out slightly so we stick to the tinned cat food. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 208Apr 25, 2012 9:24 pm Our girls daily get layer pellets, green pick, scraps and a weekly mash or porridge with apple cider vinegar, garlic & yoghurt-plus the mice, snails & crickets they happily catch. I think the cat would protest if we actually started feeding t he cat food to the chooks! It hasn't cooled off too much here yet, but we did have a (brief) wet season so I am thinking something to do with that. Actually, you might remember our neighbour's cattle have access to our block. She is about to slaughter a beast. She has generally offered us half. If we pay for cut up then we can have half. Now that is a GOOD neighbour...and we won't talk about what constitutes a BAD one Now, we just have to find the $$$ to buy a freezer to keep said half beast in RF Build: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=34534 Flooring: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=39733 Chat: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=53303 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 214Apr 25, 2012 9:52 pm With your brood you don't need a freezer-cook it Kiwi style and it'll be gone in a week! The aim is to keep the chooks off the vegie garden area allowing them to free range through the orchard-and also to keep the neighbour's PITA dog off our property! Also getting 6 bales of lucerne delivered with the above order so that I can finish mulching the garden beds in the backyard. Planting over the next few weeks will involve more roses, a couple of fruit trees, some natives and getting the vegie garden up to speed-currently carrots, beetroot and various greens are all that's in...
