They eat duck eggs a lot here. White ducks. You had them? Taste earthy. Only had them when we moved up north. Would never have them in chch, too posh.

I've had ducks in the past-their eggs make the best sponge cakes! I do plan to get a couple here as well....

Yeah, they do make good cakes. Used them in a choc cake only. Haven't eaten then fried etc. we got given a few once. Mum use to make good pavs with goose eggs ( we had 3 of the meanest geese ever, always trying to chase ya) they were gros. Rang their necks and they even tasted gros...no real meat.
Fruit looks great. Can't wait to pick my own...from your trees one day!

Hi there Cassie!
We are about to extend the chook run a further 20m along the fenceline-it will allow the hens to forage under some of the fruit trees during the day-at the moment their run is 6m & 6m-so the extra room will be appreciated I'm sure!
We are also about to add some more hens to the flock of 4 we have (currently 1 wyandotte & 3 Isa Browns)-hopefully with a couple of marans, another wyandotte and two australorps. I want some of the "old" breeds roaming around!
The chook is such an asset in the garden-food disposal unit, garden labourer and egg provider! Also able to be eaten if required-perfect pet!
I agree about the chooks but then I am biased cos I love mine and today I got my very first egg from them!! I love watching them fight/argue over food scraps! (especially meat!)
Have you considered Salmon Faverolles? I recently read in a few places that ISA browns really aren't the best ones to get and are mostly good for people starting out so try not to get any more - they just don't go the distance due to the way they have been bread etc.

Hi Lisa- actually when I extend the flock I'll be getting some Maran & Australorps. I'm keen to get some of the Heritage breeds- I got the ISA Browns purely for their egg production in these early years. They are much more friendly than Millie though (our Wyandotte) - we call her our neurotic blnde!

Rightio-this morning I've planted out chilli, capsicum & eggplant seedlings in the newly created garden bed under the kitchen window. This area faces North-East so will get plenty of sun and being against the bricks should help extend the season with the generated warmth.... the sticks are to ensure that the dogs don't decide to sleep there!
