These are two of the beds which DH & I turned over yesterday and today I hand cultivated them. I cannot believe the difference in the soil! It is already much lighter (we have alluvial clay soil) and workable! These beds will have potatoes in them this season-so by this time next year it will be close to perfect soil-YAY! Add organic material and clays become workable. Use straw or tree lopper mulch and continue that cycle. It just gets better and better. Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 164Aug 28, 2011 6:02 pm Fu-you should have seen the worms! I thought there were a lot LAST year-but OMG, they were wriggling EVERYWHERE! The chooks were scratching around, gobbling them up bat barely making a dint in the numbers! I have access to lots of various manures around here, so have the luxury of adding it and resting the bed for 6 -12 months. Husband dug trench, boys assisted by laying a spud each and then proceeded to gather as many grubs and worms as possible to throw to the chooks. Upshot of the afternoon is that we have 20 sq m of spuds in, the chooks are happy and the boys are tired! Also picked the first asparagus of the year ( a whole 2 spears at this point! ) and DH & I will enjoy it with our roast for dinner! I've just done a quick wander through the orchard & grabbed a few pics to show just some of what we have growing this year! Keep in mind that this is 18months since I planted the fruit trees as bare rooted stock... A couple of times a year we give the girls a couple of bales of whatever cheap hay/straw we can get and let them do their stuff! The hen house has a concrete floor, so by the time the bales have been scratched over for a month or two it becomes really good mulch! Love our chooks! Soooo jealous of your chooks, I've been promised mine in the new house but we need a few minor details like fences first!! We are about to extend the chook run a further 20m along the fenceline-it will allow the hens to forage under some of the fruit trees during the day-at the moment their run is 6m & 6m-so the extra room will be appreciated I'm sure! We are also about to add some more hens to the flock of 4 we have (currently 1 wyandotte & 3 Isa Browns)-hopefully with a couple of marans, another wyandotte and two australorps. I want some of the "old" breeds roaming around! The chook is such an asset in the garden-food disposal unit, garden labourer and egg provider! Also able to be eaten if required-perfect pet!
