Chooks look like they're enjoying themselves. Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 243Jun 15, 2012 11:20 am Hi Dee, I hope you don't mind my popping in I have just been reading most of this thread and I had a look at your blog yesterday too as I am keen to start vege gardens and fruit trees when we eventually move into our new house (should be starting soon). I have been inspired to start planting seeds in loo paper tubes while we are in the rental in preparation and will try the moon gardening too. Our block is about 1160m2 but is in suburbia so I would not start the garden until moving in in case plants started disappearing. Might start a compost heap though Our previous block was 815m2 and we managed to have an apricot, apple, peach and nectrine as well as two grape varieties out the back plus a plum and cherry out the front; also a mini peach in a pot and a lemon and comquat in a pot. We still have the lemon and comquat plus four self seeded apricots, two self seeded peach and one nectarine and one apple all self seeded so we will have a start in the new garden although I will only be planting one of each. I also had a vege garden for a while and it is SOOOO satisfying to use the fruit and veg I have grown. I have made lots of apricot jam; one tree produced more than enough and my friends love January when I shared the pots. I am still using some made before we left the old house and we have been in our rental for a year now! I also still have some plum jam in the cupboard. I love that you use the crockpot a lot, I do too, it's one of my favourite appliances, chuck the ingredients and forget Anyway, I hope to get ideas and hints from you and your posters so that I can become as self sufficient as possible. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 244Jun 15, 2012 11:52 am Welcome aboard! I've just put a lamb 4 1/4 in the slowcooker to braise for tonight's dinner-as I'm just about to head to work! The vegie garden is almost non-existent at the moment as we are "renovating" it to get it truly functioning how we planned. There is rocket growing, a few beetroot, seeds for onion & parsnips are sown and some seed potatoes are underground-ready to do their "thing" as the soil warms enough for them. I've also decided on positions for a couple more fruit trees....so will organise those in the next month or so. DH spent a couple of hours on the mattock loosening the clay soil.... After cleaning the old straw out of the henhouse, we layered it on one of the newly edged beds. We then spread sheep and horse manure over the top of that (readily available in the country! . Another layer of straw & manure will be applied, before compost is spread over the top. This bed will then be left for the winter and in spring will be ready for spring crops. I've prepared for the planting of peas and broadbeans over the next few days by hammering in stakes and wiring wire netting to them for the peas to climb. The broad beans are mainly being planted as living mulch. They will be chopped into the soil once they reach maturity and a few weeks later that area will be perfect for leafy greens. We've also moved our old dog pen to the rear section of the block. We will be using it as a frame to create a strawbale shelter for the lambs when we get them. Thanks For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Glad to see/hear you have picked up the mantle(?) Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 249Jul 12, 2012 1:31 pm Hi there Onc! I've seen great results over the past 18 months or so by using the planting by the moon system...although I've also been using minute amounts of Seamungus, Seasol & Powerfeed, so results may be skewed somewhat! Even though we are in the process of rearranging the vegie beds and preparing for the Spring/Summer planting, in addition to the above asparagus we have potatoes and peas breaking the soil. Rocket is growing merrily, onions have sprouted-as have some parsnips & carrots. I also noticed that some spinach and silverbeet has self sown as well. Blueberries are budding up, there are early apples forming in the orchard, the renovated strawberry beds are going well and the raspberry canes were thinned on the weekend. I had a couple of tomatoes that had seeds actually sprouting inside, so I thought I would try an experiment and put a couple in a clear 2 L fruit juice container with a bit of potting soil. I was also cutting up butternut pumpkin so I popped two of those in also and placed the container in a warm spot so it's like a mini greenhouse. Well, the tomato seeds have grown a couple of inches (don't think they will do anything more) but one of the pumpkin seeds sprouted and is now about 6 inches then noticed the other one has spouted too and is a couple of inches tall! I don't know what to do with them now as I wasn't expecting them to shoot lol https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 252Jul 23, 2012 7:30 pm Pot them up into something bigger and keep them in a warm, bright sheltered spot and keep the experiment going. Building the Denver by Metricon on acreage Land settlement: 24/8/15 Contracts: 8/7/16 Finance approved: 5/8/16 Council approval.....? viewtopic.php?f=31&t=79213 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 254Jul 24, 2012 6:21 pm bubblynutter, I have managed to grow one twice, but gave them both away and I don't think they survived, however I was taught to place two toothpicks into the avocado seed to give it a kind of handle and use the handle to suspend the seed in a jar of water. I can't remember which way up the seed goes though... This method worked for two as I said but I have tried on other occasions without success. Dee, I will definately plant out the pumpkins and see what happens. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 255Jul 24, 2012 7:44 pm If you can get hold of a clear plastic bag you could lay it over some stakes to form a mini grasshouse... I have a rather large pot that had lettuce in it (mum gave me them as they were going away for a while) so I will plant them in there and cover with the plastic bag, actually I've got some large sheets of bubble wrap - that would insulate as well https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Sufficiently sufficient..... 257Jul 25, 2012 8:00 am Good thinking! I hilled up potatoes today and got excited to realise that I have a heap of parsnips and onions sprouting! I think I'll have to resow the peas because it rained for a week straight after the last batch were sown and I think most rotted in the ground. Nothing worse than garden centre staff that wouldn't know the bottom of an onion from the top let alone what season the plants should be grown. I see that every week. When gardeners unwittingly buy out of season veggies or herbs, then fail at growing them, many will loose the desire to grow their own food. In the above case at least there is awareness and keen sense of adventure to try It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it.
