Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 03, 2010 5:09 pm I want to put a couple of bougainvillea plants along our cream colourbond fence to break it up a bit and introduce some much-needed colour into the garden, but I'm unsure of the best way to train them up the fence. The options seem to be wooden trellis or putting wires up the fence, in some sort of pattern. I've read that bougainvillea can rip wood apart, so maybe wood is not such a good idea here if I have the option of using wires. What kind of pattern for the wires would be the best? And would drilling some sort of screw into the colourbond fence posts cause it to rust in the long term? Any help or advice will be very much appreciated, I've got my two little plants sitting on the patio looking a bit sad and lonely and looking like they need to be planted very soon. Re: Bougainvillea 2Oct 03, 2010 8:43 pm Star pickets or coppers logs with fencing wire strung at 400mm intervals. These puppies will stand on their own in years to come so give them a strong start. Prep the soil. A plant will only ever be as good as the soil they grow in If you plant is sick, your soil is sick Get the soil good and you'll be blessed with fast growth and loads of colour. Cert organic soils and heavy layers of straw for mulch or tree lopper mulch with lots of leaf in it 100mm thick Re: Bougainvillea 3Oct 03, 2010 9:48 pm One thing I forgot to add is that the fence sits on top of a limestone block, so the star pickets/logs would not be flush with the fence if inserted into the ground. I might see if we can drill the pickets into the stuff that holds the fence posts in to the block. Fu - I'm an avid reader of all your soil prep posts and so I've got my organic soil and green mulch on order, and stacks of seasol, powerfeed and olsens green bio ready to use when we do the garden beds properly. I bet you have footings that can be dug through Re: Bougainvillea 5Oct 15, 2010 8:50 pm Not sure if you are still following your thread, but wanted to flag the development of baby bougainvillea - a dwarf variety - which is suited to small spreads rather that eating the back shed (for example) which tends to be its reputation. Among this variety, there are some amazing colours which I have not seen in the bigger variety. I've grown 'Krishna' on my balcony for years - a beautiful lilac - although also like the deep purple - and keep an eye out for 'Tango' - an orangey/reddish-flower with pink tips (or something like that! two-toned).
