Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 29, 2010 10:30 am Hi everyone, I planted some apples bare rooted and they started really well. However - over the last 2 weeks the leaves have started to look dry and almost burned - here's some examples We did have a short cold snap so I thought it might have been frost damage - but it's progressively occurring on 5 trees since we've had fine weather. In terms of care, I water daily - I'd say each tree gets about 3-4L daily - and weekly I water with worm tea/seasol/powerfeed. Any ideas? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Apple tree help! 2Sep 29, 2010 11:01 am too wet. The leaf tips are dieing off as water is pushed away from the roots. The cells in the tips fill with water and burst. Then the tips and margins brown off. You will find if you feel the dead parts they should still be soft and moist. After a while they'll dry and go crispy. The rolling leaves can indicate an excess of salts too but not always, no matter what it will have to do with the soil. Back off on the water, train the roots to go deeeeep. Mulch heavily with straw- 100mm, very essential. You may only need rainfall for a while to come Swap the wire you have tied them off with to something soft. Some rubber tree ties are easy and cheap to get from your local garden centre http://www.premiumplastics.com.au/produ ... efault.asp Re: Apple tree help! 3Sep 29, 2010 11:04 am Thanks Fu! I've already mulched to about 7cm but I'll add some more. I'll also look for the soft ties After 4 years - we're in! Re: Apple tree help! 4Sep 29, 2010 11:14 am Not just that little bit around the stem, the whole bed needs doing. The soils health and moisture extend out way past the base of the plants. In fact to concentrate just on individual plants won't yield success because the as I and many others say, Always feed the soil and never feed the plant Garden/farm the soil and some stuff grows in that we like Re: Apple tree help! 5Sep 29, 2010 11:15 am Fu - you mean cover the entire bed - not just where I dug the hole? I'm growing a green manure crop around the hole to try and improve the soil so that when the roots want to spread out - there's somewhere to go besides hard clay. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Apple tree help! 6Sep 29, 2010 11:22 am Yeah that is very good Just get the straw in a round the green manure crops as they grow. For now let the soil dry and you can let the green crop grow a bit more Hi , I'm currently going through this now within the Whitehorse council which has a similar set of restrictions. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9516 |
