Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 27, 2010 6:19 pm This is the only picture I have of the front of our house. I know it is terrible! I will replace it when I have a better one The land is sloping in case you can't tell from the pic. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We have a cream coloured driveway now, and will have stained wooden steps coming down from the front door to the foothpath with step lights. Each step will be longer than the last, so they are getting gradually wider towards the footpath. Now i just need some ideas with what to do on the right side of the steps. We want a simple modern garden that is easy to maintain. Nothing messy, and nothing too australian/desert looking, so no grey/blue plants for instance. We prefer rich greens and other colours. Any suggestions?? Very open to any ideas! The little green plants up the left side of the path are a nice green colour, there are two types in there. Any idea what those ones are? That's stops them taking over. Just slice them a shovel or axe when they get a bit fat, don't let them get out of control as that's when it's a real slog to fix. Any idea what type of cordylines they are? And what type the one in the last pic is? Also, I wondered whether the first pic was yuccas, but I thought yuccas looked more like a tree when they got to that height (with a skinny brown trunk). Do they grow bigger than in that pic? But the green cordy in the last pics would be something like Cordyline Objecta. As for the Yucca's Try googling to get an idea of what the look like. My neighbour always cuts them back and gives away what he cuts off, all you have to do is pout in water till it forms roots then plant it. Easy. Fu... your opinion???? There are squillions of them at every nursery. Rudolph got the others right...and I don't know what the plant behind the frog is, either. The pic's too small to be able to tell. Yuccas can look different, depending on how they've been propagated. Those have been grown from tips the ones you see about the same size with developed trunks have been grown from cuttings from trunks/branches. They strike very easily. I have both types.... These are tips that I was given (they're quite a lot bigger now and don't look all straggly any more). The Purple Cordylines are nice Aww, the Cordyline Objecta grows in to a tree as well, judging by google pics. I don't want little trees! hahaha. Flax doesn't like hot winds, but they don't take much effort to keep tidy. I gove mine a trim a couple of times a year and they're fine. larajane Aww, the Cordyline Objecta grows in to a tree as well, judging by google pics. I don't want little trees! hahaha. Is there any way of stopping the yucca and cordylines getting much bigger? Like keeping them in a pot for instance? ...Can I plant the pot? Keeping plants in pots will restrict their growth, but all cordys end up pretty tall, with all the foliage at the top. Yuccas can be lopped if they get a bit big - then you have to wait for them to shoot, which doesn't take all that long. You can also strike the tips and get bonus plants. larajane Your garden is my favorite Kek I love it! Thanks! I just want everything to grow a lot more. This is for the front garden, and I don't want them to tall in front of the house. I want a little strip of pebbles with plants in it along the front of the house, just can't figure out what plants to use. Don't mind if one of two are about 1 metre high, but want most probably no more than 60cm high.
