The bottom right spiky plant looks like a palm as I think I used to have one many many years ago. Can't think of its name though. Not much help to you! The expert gardeners on this forum will know. They do look great, you could get the same feel with a cycad anyway. Yeah I agree the red plant is a cordyline. Also, if you can't find the right red colour cordyline, you could think of the bromiliads? They have a variety of different colours and their flowers can come in a bright pink/red which looks amazing. I think that green shrub behind the seat is a maple shrub. I can't see the leaf, but simply by going the way the leaves are slightly falling. Beautiful plants, my favourites. They come in a range of colours too. With the large spikey type plants, my first thought was a needle palm, but I think their leaf is a little 'spikey-er'. That leaf doesn't look to have thorns on it, which the needle palm does. Hope this helps. I do love the picture, it's a cross between an asian tropical garden, very soothing. I have never planted them, but they do look great I might think about them for the next garden. The book seems to think they are good waterwise plants, apparently they adjust to the environment which is interesting. Also the colour you get is connected to the fertiliser... interesting stuff!! (P.S. they rec. a lawn fertiliser for the best colour) Building with Life$tyle Homes in Perth SOR Key Dates on First Page of my Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38761 Re: Can someone please identify the plants in this picture? 9Sep 21, 2010 5:05 pm Thanks Shez! I have one in a pot in our al fresco room, but I wouldn't dare try to plant it out until I have some trees and shrubs to protect it. Red Star or Red Fountain are a better bet for Melbourne, although they're not the same shape. The photo is way too small for my eyes to make out the details, but the bushy plants behind the seat could be the Asian Bell tree, Radermachera Sinica (also known as "china doll"). I'm sure there is a red one of those that would look like that when not in flower maybe? http://www.triplantanol.com/biggerplants.html my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Can someone please identify the plants in this picture? 14Sep 21, 2010 9:23 pm It's not a canna...it's definitely a cordy. A canna would give a similar effect, but they go all cruddy in winter. As long as you don't mind half-dead looking plants in the cold months, they're fine. This is sundance: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Very pretty - I have three along my side fence. The one in LaraJane's pic is similar, but according to this, it's Red Stripes: http://www.mooseyscountrygarden.com/new-zealand-native-plants/red-green-cordyline.html 1 368 Murraya could be a great option for you. It creates a great tall screening hedge but doesn't drop fruit like lily pilly. The flowers smell divine. 2 10245 I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15275 |
