Re: Raised Wicking Veggie Bed Thread - with photos 82May 03, 2012 9:11 am Just an update - Things didn't grow that well over summer. It was really wet here, and the larger beds didn't seem to get enough sun. I only had to top up the water in the beds three times, though, which shows how much rain we had! I think I missed it .... thanks! Hi McLaren, Soilblockers are a simple mechanical device thats creates a compressed block of soil with and indent in the top for your seed. They start off very small so you can minimise the cost of soil by only creating a sized cube that is required to germinate. Also as their is no pot the roots do not get pot bound and benefit from air pruning. Once the seed has germinated you can make a larger block (2 inch) with an indent that accommodates the smaller block. This eliminates root shock usually caused when transplanting. There are 7 different sized units to suit home growers right up to full commercial gardens (Growers can make and plant approx 2,000 blocks per hour).
