Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 15, 2010 2:29 am I would like to do a two tiered terrace retaining wall in our backyard. Our backyard is all sand (I'm in Perth). I would like to eventually add a stackstone on the front of the retaining walls. My question - can I get a brickie to do the retaining walls - are there any types of regulations I need to be mindful of? I know in my shire any thing higher than 450mm requires a permit. If we built two terraces both no higher than 450mm - are we good to go? Are there structural support issues I need to take into consideration. What I would need to backfill with? Back terrace would be 20m wide x 2m deep - would have mature trees and natives. Front terrace 20m wide x 5m deep. Would be grassed area - thinking Empire Zoysia. Would love some input - as this is all new to me. Cheers, Jacs Edited to add: back fence is pine. Would do brick walls then add stackstone at a later date. Sorry if I'm all over the place! Re: Terraced retaining walls 3Sep 15, 2010 7:23 pm Jac6007 - not sure if a single brick retaining - even if under 450mm - is strong enough especially as you intend to have mature trees and native shrubs - their roots will crack your retaining with no problems. As well you'll need to check with somebody re drainage as there is usually some type of aggregate to be used behind the wall. Backfill is usually normal soil and if you want to plant you'll need some good garden soil/compost/fertiliser worked in down to 300-400mm - don't layer the good soil on top of the normal soil. Re retaining wall structure - do a search on google for retaining wall specs - might give you a better understanding. Check this type of retaining as well http://www.twinside.com.au/ - there are quite a few finishes and type on the market - just googled quickly these guys to give you an idea what I'm talking about - but there are quite a few suppliers. They are quite heavy and therefore good for retaining, and cheap as at $4 a block. If you are going to render them or put stack stone as a cladding on anyway, then I would consider this. However, I would ask someone about using limestone as a basis for the cladding in the first place. I used the following link for advice on how to build and seal the wall etc. http://www.limestone-resources.com.au/tips.htm The very bottom of the above link talks about fixing cladding. Re: Terraced retaining walls 8Sep 17, 2010 5:21 pm It seems to me that a lot of fencing contractors can do retaining too, but they seem to use that slab and post style like Bagheera posted. Otherwise there's a lot of people that specialise in limestone walls. I don't know if a brickie could or woudl do it. It seems from a quick google that anything over .5m needs council approval, so 2x .45m terraces would probably need council approval. I like the look of natural limestone as it is I think it's lovely and maintainence free but that's JMO ~*~Moved in on the 16th April 2011~*~ Render your bathroom walls, two opinions versus the one, makes you wonder. 3 4203 The spacing of the studs looks pretty large especially for a load bearing wall. 3 8210 Nope, only on the inside, I've literally has my ears to the brick outside and can't hear anything. I can sort of 'reset' the noise by pressing firmly on the studs. This… 10 5031 |
