Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 2Jun 21, 2010 10:48 am Yeah you can but it won't grow much until spring. Depending on the variety, it will most probably go brown till september. I wouldn't bother now, wait till september when we get most of our rainfall + far more hours of sunlight to help establish the turf. Worth waiting the 2 months so you don't have to water that much and it will be green and lush far quicker. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 3Jun 22, 2010 12:30 am If I were doing the lawn I would have a go But for the average person why not focus on soil prep at your leisure Just keep that up in the mean time and that lawn won't skip a beat come summer. Do you need a lawn at all? The only thing a real awn can do that nothing else can is provide an area for kids to play on safely and in a healthy way. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 4Jun 23, 2010 10:41 am Thanks Fu, I was hoping for some encouragement! As to why we want lawn... it's only about one third of the backyard and is for our dog (small) to have some a nice surface to play on. She loves to run, chase tennis balls so we want something that she can't hurt herself on! Thanks for your encouragement - now to spend the next couple of weekends getting the soil ready! Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 5Jun 23, 2010 1:10 pm July is the coldest month in Melbourne (average 13 degrees) and has bugger all sunlight (average 3.7 hours). By all means lay the turf but don't expect anything resembling green to be happening till september. August has way more sunlight and warmer day/night temps in comparison. I'm hoping that you meant more than 3.7 hrs of sunlight! It is an average though from the last 150 years, considering the climate has changed in the last decade i think things are a bit different now. To make you feel better at least we have more sunlight than Sydney over spring/summer/ early autumn when it counts. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 9Jun 28, 2010 8:02 am I'm Victorian and thought that you meant that the sun only rose for that long Melbourne's smog probably has something to do with it... I suppose I'm thinking of daylight.... Edit-I just had a look at that link and the daylight hours are only the mean for the years 1955 to 1967- I wonder why? All the other stats span a much larger (and more recent) time frame. Edit check out http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_086351.shtml its from the last 30 years which is most relevant Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 11Sep 07, 2010 11:52 am Thought I'd revive this thread now that we are officially in Spring Does anyone know a good retailer to buy instant lawn in the Northern or Western Suburbs in Melbourne? I am after about 10m2. I remember seeing a place in Derrimut referenced a while ago? Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 12Sep 07, 2010 3:53 pm Your local nursery can get it in. Bunnies, mitre ten can as well. They just buy from the big turf farms like HG turf, canturf, lilydale etc. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 13Sep 08, 2010 12:49 pm This is the place i remember: http://www.soilworx.com.au/index.php Bunnies only do greater than 25 square metres. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 14Sep 08, 2010 1:51 pm looks like soil worx use HG like a lot of places and from memory HG have 25m2 minimum where ever you buy it. I picked up 10m2 last year in ringwood from one of their direct distributers, give them a call and they will give you pick up locations around melbourne. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 15Sep 11, 2010 12:06 am I know this is Sydney but I just ordered mine from a landscape yard along with my organic soil and tonne of Leaf mulch I only ordered 15 sq metres of Sir Walter and they did not even flinch at the small amount I went outside once. Re: Can we lay turf in Melbourne at this time of year???? 18Sep 12, 2010 9:33 am Melbourne Turf Supplies in Ringwood do small lots - I got 12ms from them a while back. They do palmetto and sapphire buffalo. Not sure what else. It's a long way from the west though.
