Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 09, 2010 2:49 pm Hi, Recently I found a particular specie of bird come to my garden. well, it should be quite a good piece of news, but when some days I observed more carefully, I found the frequent visitor-- a black bird with a patch of white on the back, usually wandered among the garden beds. They always left with a worm, or even a few in their mouth. Is it a way to balance the ecosystem/soil web? The birds didn't seem very interested in slaters. My humble and hardworking fellows, I miss you ! Re: My garden has birds come, but... 2Sep 09, 2010 8:55 pm yep it's just part of the cycle of life and they won't eat all your worms so don't worry about it, birds will come and eat worms, little birds will eat insects and it's all part of the ecosystem and the way it's meant to be. Re: My garden has birds come, but... 6Sep 10, 2010 12:04 am I have the same drama when I let our chooks out for a roam. They tear our seedlings to bits, eat all the ripe strawberrys and eat all sorts of worms. Not too mention pooing all over the paving and spreading mulch everywhere. However, I think it is not too much hassle given they give us eggs every day and clean up our scraps. I think there has to be a bit of give and take. Enjoy the birds. It is great to have them as visitors to our yards. As to what type it was, it could be a Butcherbird too. We get them occasionally in our yard too. Re: My garden has birds come, but... 7Sep 10, 2010 5:43 pm Check out the link in my sig Or just google Birds In Backyards website They are fine to peck around. When they do that and nick a few worms, they will be aerating your soil. Many birds will forage lawns and gardens for worms and grubs. I was once called up by a chap who hated seeing piles of soil in his precious lawn. It was near on vacuumed each day! He didn't want the worms there, they messed things up He didn't like the birds on his lawn and wanted all of them gone! He was a.... lawn Natzi! What an idiot I thought! The worms were doing a great job. Kill them and kill many other things. That leads to poor soil health, that leads to turf diseases which further leads to more turf disease and pest problems. That further leads to increases in a reliance on processed fertilisers which further reduces soil health further increases in disease problems and increases lawns water consumption. That means even more maintenance. All he had to do was put up with a few soil piles each morning for a little while. They wouldn't be there for ever I walked away from the job and advised he might wish to get the advice of someone else Anyway the point of my crap story is that we just need some patience and understanding with our gardens and new landscapes. Everything is a balance, with balance we have harmony in the garden That was a bit guru like wasn't it Re: My garden has birds come, but... 9Sep 10, 2010 11:48 pm The birds getting worms is part of the beautiful web of life It all begins with the soil and ends with the soil and for every worm the birds get there is probably 100,000 or more doing their thing in the soil I went outside once.
