Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Sep 08, 2010 11:45 am Hello, We are just starting to build our house on the narrow block of land shown below (with the digger on it). The area roughly crosshatched in yellow has since been cleared out a little and replanted with some native trees. As seen in the photo, there is a retaining wall marked in red near the boundary which we are thinking we need to fence to stop kids and/or pets wandering off the edge. Given the bush that we will be looking out onto, we really want to find a type of fence that won't obstruct the view too much and won't detract from the 'natural' feel of the block. At the moment we are considering a split sleeper style of fence with two horizontal sleepers and vertical posts, similar to what you often see in some rural areas. I suppose a pool fence would work well in a functional sense, but we're not too keen on the look of them for an area like this. Another option is to potentially just plant a dense shrub around the top of the retaining wall, as the Moreton Bay Council has informed us that we're not actually required to have a fence there (which seems surprising to me given that the drop is around 2.5 metres high in places...). So although it seems like this may be an option too, we'd rather have something a little more dog proof than a hedge, for example. We'd love to hear any and all suggestions you might have, whether it's for a type of fence that would work or some other solution to the problem! I reckon that would suit the area and look quite nice too. Quick search returned something like; Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ However I'd be tempted to use larger horizontal timbers. I'd be keen to see what you end up with. Re: Suggestions for style of fence please (photo attached!) 3Sep 09, 2010 12:29 am If you have a view toward this direction I would be more inclined to go with a post and wire fence rather than post and rail. Post and wire is still a solid fence and you can build it quite high but it's less obtrusive. I'm sure you can get fixed sheets of square wire but I don't know how to better explain what it's called. Cmooring, funnily enough we'd used the same photo for inspiration before, so that's exactly the sort of thing we're thinking of. I'm not sure what you mean by using 'dense native vegetation on the stone side'. Do you mean planting some native shrubs or something on the outside of the fence? We're looking to make the whole fence as 'transparent' as possible because it's quite a nice outlook in that direction. That said, some dense shrubs or a hedge around the base may discourage dogs/kids from sneaking through the gaps though. Mrs snowden, thanks for the post and wire suggestion. Our main concern with these types of fence is that the wire doesn't sag or rust and basically look old and shabby. Do you know how well the wire keeps over time? I do like the look and transparency of some of these fences, and found this one online which I liked the look of (and have just requested a rough quote on). It's not as ugly as it sounds and we lived on the coast when we had ours and never had a problem with rust. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. You'd mentioned a fence, or possibly dense shrubs. I was thinking a low fence to allow for the view with some shrubs to prevent kids/dogs from getting through. Re: Suggestions for style of fence please (photo attached!) 7Sep 10, 2010 1:35 pm Hmm, sounds like we'll definitely have to check out this rigid wire. Shrubs around the base of the fence may well work too -we'll just have to make them low enough to not block the view but hopefully dense enough to stop the dogs or kids getting through. Thanks to both of you for the suggestions - definitely gives us some ideas to think over.
