Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 19, 2010 10:42 am Hi There Can anyone advise what is a good specimen tree for an area(back yard) that is 9mL x 4mW. I originally planted Little Gem but after doing a lot of research have found that they dont grow 4m H x approx. 2m wide as marketed. They infact grow much taller and wider. Have also found them to be tempermental, not at all an easy to grow tree as marketed also. Anyway, getting back to my space, behind my yard are some very tall trees (bushland). Doesnt block a lot of sun though as there is about a 4 m buffer of lawn. Any ideas? Oh, and I live on the mid north coast of NSW. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 3Aug 19, 2010 4:25 pm How bout a weeping Cherry?? what kind of garden is there ATM though as a Cherry would look out of place in a native garden LOL I went outside once. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 5Aug 21, 2010 4:54 pm Thanks for the thoughts. Still unsure though. At the moment have Magnolia Little Gems x 2 - but have had to replace 1 of twice now - so not happy with their sucess ratio. Thinking of redesigning the garden completely at the moment. I have a "Summer Red" eucalpyt. I love the flower - some say they say reasonable size, others have said they grow way bigger than suggested. Anyone with any advice on these would be good too. Have left it in pot until I decide what to do. I know it requires little water and very well drained soil. Would love to know what anyones thought are on the summer red for a 9m L x 4m W space. Would be placed at the end of the 9m. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 6Aug 21, 2010 7:43 pm Weeping Cherry isn't going to do much showing off on the North Coast of NSW There is a massive number of threads relating to this very topic Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 7Aug 22, 2010 6:09 am Missed that bit LOL I went outside once. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space/coastal/& nth NSW 8Aug 22, 2010 8:45 am Thanks Fu. I've been reading the other topics and most dont relate to my area eg. the trees that will survive in Melbourne e.g the ornamentals - generally dont survive here as we dont get cold enough and too close to beach. As for the sizes - I've been researching everyones examples in other topics and are still finding it hard to find an actual small tree. I know they exist just wanting to see if someone has some great ideas. So far the only one I can come up with for here is the crepe myrtle. From experience, I find them quiet slow growers and my nursery up here only sells very small .5m at most for height. Maybe someone knows of a seller that sells more established stock? and will transport northern NSW? I know they are $$$ but as I only need 1 or 2, so its not so bad. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 9Aug 22, 2010 9:00 am Oh and one more very important factor. I need a tree that is not considered to be an invasive weed. Sounds simple I know but let me assure you its not. We have Landcare landscaping behind and beside us and they are always telling me the "WEEDS" I have around my pool, eg. Moraya, Duranta. Unfortunately there will come a time that they will make me remove these but because they have been there for 15 years and screen us from a public park next door, I'm digging my heels in (at the moment anyway). However, as I want to be responsible with my new plantings, I definately dont want anything that can become a nuisance. With our climate a small problem can become a major issue really fast. Thanks in advance. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 10Aug 22, 2010 6:50 pm Fair point there garden lover I'll see about getting more ideas for Brissie and North Coast NSW happening. No time avail just now but hang in there. Re: Speciment Tree for Small space 11Aug 23, 2010 7:18 am Thanks very much Fu for your help and all the others who have tried. I really appreciate it.
