Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 17, 2010 5:41 am Just thought I would put this up in here so I can come back to it once I finally get my block of land, build my house (The BURROW) and see how if the visual I have in my head ATM is the same as the final result Plus I hope it helps those out who are a little daunted Now I have already have in mind the block I want, I also know the way it is block is situated, the house we are building if we get the block we want, the soil type(ok it is non-existant)Hard compacted clay, Etc etc etc But why am I doing everything back to front?? why have a plan for the landscaping even though you have no land, the house aint built, and you probably will have NO money to do it once you build (so true) Now knowing the rough cost to have the most STUNNING front yard and what will be in it, helps me get what I want and appeases the SWMBO It means we can budget it for it early on and put money away for the GARDEN BLING, and research where I can get the best deals on the plants, soil, hard landscaping I want So my plan is to do an WA Arid/Dryland Heath inspired out the front (it will face east(yes I have it back to front)) The side yard (Faces south) will be Tassie forest inspired (glass window splashback actually will look out on to this area) Back yard will have Temperate Heath/Forest with lawn for the Dogs and joeys(kids) and Veges/herbs up the side (North) The first couple of months I will actually be feeding the soil(trucking in Low PHOS Native mix + molasses, Yoghurt, compost, etc) breaking that clay up. With all good jobs Prep is the KEY I will watch how the water behaves on the block during (I love standing in the rain) and after rain so I can maximise the use of rainfall and reduce my dependence on the rainwater tank(cause I will want to wash my car with that free soft water FTW!!::lol:: ) Front yard (Red flowers) Feature plants are XANTHORRHOEA's probably 3 (depends how much I can get them for) maybe more Acacia Acog (I blame FU for this addition) Wife(SWMBO) said HAS to have Kangaroo/Catpaws(not going to argue there) WA grafted flowering gum (they are so SEXY) NSW waratah (I did say inspired) and hopefully each spring a bed of everlastings plants will be mulched with nice layer of organics and around the beds a deep layer of RED deco granite (I dont think there will be much just a small path around the beds and I wont compact it Side yard (Green) I love Tasmania and I love cooking so I am going to use the space that is south facing for a bed of different sized Dicksonia Antarctica Tree Ferns this is were I may actually spend the most time in getting the soil right as these guys LOVE HUMUS rich soil I might add some other plants in this area but I think the roots from a few of these DA's will out compete anything else Backyard is simple (Yellow) Sir Walter Buffalo Banksia Serrata Banksia Integ. Gymea lily Lomandra Yellow Buttons and Hardenbergia (sarsparilla vine) As you can see I put up the colours of the flowers that will be the DOMINANT colour in each area but there will be splashes of other colours as well just to mix it up Now I plan on spending most of the budget on the Soil conditioning and structure, xanths, tree ferns, and gymea lilys as they are all slow growing and therefore cost more in large specimens but will add instant WOW to the garden. The rest of the plants I should be able to pick up at Tubestock. I am a massive fan of tube stock and my current garden shows that in a short period of time they will outgrow larger potted specimens 4-1! There are plenty of great places that I know of that I can get these plants from, and at $2.50 a plant(less the more you buy) well you can afford to make some mistakes now I dont reckon I will be in my house till Christmas 2011 so this will be taking shape either march-april 2012 or sept-oct 2012 Feel free to comment (especially Sydney folks) tell me I am mad, backwards, whatever but if I can help anyone out with stealing ideas ETC let me know if you want pics of the different plants tell me and I will pop em up Cheers I went outside once. Re: Landscaping - The wombat way Well my plan ATM 2Oct 31, 2010 5:32 am So now I have my block and rough siting of the house I have 2 side areas and I am now moving away from a totally native garden to only having the front yard and the south side garden(which shall stay as currently planned) as a sexy waterwise native gardens However I think that the time frame for my build means that I will have a very curious 3-4 year old and what better way to educate him in healthy eating habits, the food web and everything mucky then to have a food garden with fruit, vegetables and herbs Currently my Sister in Law has a SUPER patch and he loves going in and eating everything straight off the vine (figuratively speaking) during visits so with all the new build time to utlise the 30m of northly aspect and learn to grow my own food So I am going to push myself gardening wise as this will be truly new ground for me My plan is 5 raised beds possibly colourbond or ironbark/redgum a whole bed dedicated to different varieties of the humble SPUD A bed for carrots, beans, peas, a bed just for Herbs (parsley, oregano, thyme, Basil, etc etc) A fruit bed (berries, tomatoes, etc) and lastly a salad bed for leafy veges now thats along the side of my house done I may have a passionfruit vine added along the side fence too Now the backyard will be the typical strip of lawn and across the back fence A citrus hedge I am hoping for lime, orange, and lemons or happy with just limes (they are crazy expensive at the grocer you know) I will be rotating crops etc yearly so here is to learning about the web of life comments welcome I went outside once. Re: Landscaping - The wombat way Well my plan ATM 3Oct 31, 2010 6:18 am Love the sound of all of that If you think you'll need to put shade cover over some of the raised beds, it's easier if all the beds are the same length. Then, when you rotate what you grow in each bed, the cover will fit over the next bed. We made our beds to fit the available space and they are all different lengths.
