Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 05, 2007 1:31 pm Hi Guys
We are looking at having a brick courtyard built in the front of our house enclosing our bedroom which has sliding doors and our spa area. The front of the house is South facing and the spa is located on the East. We are looking at getting it built with the maxi bricks and then rendered. And maybe a header layer of red bricks to match the house. I would just like suggestions on which colour to have it rendered. I had initially wanted a deep charcoal but am wondering whether it will look any good. I have attached a photo of the front of our house. The courtyard will be built where the current one is (which only encloses our bedroom) but will extend right across. And the brick wall shown will be knocked down which will open up the spa area. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Brick Courtyard 2Nov 05, 2007 1:33 pm Also, the brick wall will be 14 metres across and 1.8 m high. What colour is your CB roof? And what colour, roughly, is the painted board over your bedroom window and front door area? Anyways the roof is Zincalume and the painted board is cream. All the trims of the windows are cream. Our door is wooden but I was hoping to paint it black. And maybe eventually even change the gutters to black and the fascia to black. But I doubt I would do these anytime soon. Re: Brick Courtyard 5Nov 05, 2007 2:20 pm I’ll have a look at this one tonight also…..a couple of scotches and the blurry roof will look JUST fine! I’m keen to see what you do, are you going to have a cover on it? A roof?
Ok….I think if you paint the board sections over the door and over your room a deep grey, then paint the render the same colour it will complement each other. The same for all your other selections gutters and facias do those the grey as well. You can still leave your windows the smooth cream. I assume your garage doors are cream as well? Re-paint those the grey also. Your front door, with a fly screen I see, will hardly be noticed through the screen. Try and stay away from a solid BLACK, it fades and is too hot a colour to use. I will give you a darkish Grey to use so it will be as good as black, just not as hard looking. I suggest Dulux either “Gasgoyne Grey” or "Leadman” the last being quite dark. All you have to do now is go to a paint store, and check out the colours. Remember I use a fan deck, so the colours may not be on the shelf for you to look at. You might have to get them to show you their Dulux fan deck, so you can see the colours. Greys a good choice it will blend well with your roof. Post some photos when done, I’m keen to see. Now I just want to clarify the colours you are recommending are for use on the render, the gutters, facsia, door, and the board sections? Also, what do you think about having the red brick header course on top of the wall ?? ? I like simplicity and would also like a modern look. We are planning on removing the pergola we have over the spa so the whole area will be uncovered. I am just planning on using a large shade umbrella for shade protection or even maybe having shade sails put up. Unfortunately we just have a carport and our colourbond fence is that federation green. A lot of the houses around our area have green federation fences and gutters facsia and for some reason we thought it would look good. I hate it. We have a pergola out the back which is black steel posts and cream colourbond - which looks fantastic. Our backyard is liquid limestone. Anyways back to the front yard - the courtyard will give us a whole other area to use instead of being wasted space. I havent got as far as deciding how to landscape. I am waiting for the brick wall to be finished and then will decide what to do. We are still waiting for council approval. Anyway thankyou so much for your advice - I really appreciate it.
