Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 09, 2010 11:47 pm We are putting lawn at the front of our beach house property (with native garden bed near the house). I'm unsure whether to bite the bullet and just do lawn all the way to the road (inc council verge) or whether we should stop the lawn before the council property and put something else there that will still look ok next to lawn but reduce our need to water so much lawn. We do want a certain amount of lawn for kids to play on. We are going to reticulate the lawn and will be on automatic timer since we are not always at the property. I don't want anything slippery on council verge like pebbles (and that will obviously get into lawn to stuff up mower!). I think our neighbour has limestone. Any ideas? Width of block is approximately 17metres. Many thanks. Re: What to put on council verge? 2Aug 10, 2010 1:03 am Grevillea Gin Gin Gem. A bit of hand watering this summer if planted now or next autumn will mean it is fine by summer. Mow it a few times a year and it will look like the best lawn you've ever seen, till you realise at closer inspection, it isn't lawn Check with the council about minimum set back from the verge. No gravel can be used as it is considered a hazard by a road. Just mulch it along that bit. Councils vary between 1.5 and 1m of clear verge from the road side. Just check, Incase someone from the council wants to park and get out onto the verge. Must be clear Re: What to put on council verge? 3Aug 10, 2010 1:04 am Plant 30-50 in there in little tubes at say $3 each and done. Re: What to put on council verge? 4Aug 19, 2010 11:25 am Fu, is there an alternative to grevilliea Gin Gin Gem - something that doesn't flower? Only because of kids playing/walking near it/on it and the bees stings that may occur! Both my kids are somewhat allergic! Re: What to put on council verge? 6Aug 21, 2010 7:34 pm Oh what a top choice! hey I was going through the absolute mountains of Horticulture literature I have filed away and found some great verge planting lists. There was a bit of info so it is going to take a while to get down onto Homeone. Loads of info. I will be posting it in the thread dedicated to this topic in the stickies at the top. *Please carry this topic in in that sticky Or please post a link to this thread in the sticky Otherwise we have information strewn everywhere across the forum Then it is too hard to find Re: What to put on council verge? 7Aug 21, 2010 7:43 pm Quote: Check with the council about minimum set back from the verge. Re: What to put on council verge? 8Aug 21, 2010 7:46 pm That maybe and you should find that back in the day it was accepted but now modern occ health and safety generally doesn't allow for it. It isn't a policy of most councils to make people who have had them for many years remove them. They do encourage people to avoid it's use by applying the modern guidelines to new landscapes. 0 9797 Iām loving the potential versatility and practicality of a bench seat in a shower. Anyone had one of these done recently? Not sure if they are straight forward and easy… 0 750 Even if it's not being sub-divided and you want to keep it as Torrens title, you will still need to talk to a town planner or Council themselves, to see if they will allow… 1 11015 |
