Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jul 13, 2010 12:25 pm Hello All, I have the worst gardening sense in the world so I'm asking for people who actually are good at this thing to give me an opinion. We've just moved into a new place, and I want to plant (and in fact have started to plant) white and pink standard roses along the front of the house. There's a set of steps that lead up to the front door, and I was thinking of placing a weeping cherry either side of the steps. What I want to know is whether the weeping cherry and the roses will look good together, or whether the plants are just too different to work (eg, one's formal, one's not kind of thing). I was wanting to buy the plants in winter while they're bare rooted (and therefore affordable). If weeping cherries are not the go (which will make me sad, but I'll survive) what *would* look good with roses? I'm a fan of the old english garden/cottage garden feel, in case someone needs to know/wants to know that. Also, the section of land is north facing. Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 2Jul 13, 2010 2:50 pm A weeping tree IMO is quite formal and sits with std roses well. It looks odd in winter obviously but around my area it is a very common site along with weeping birch & maples. Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 3Jul 13, 2010 2:53 pm Yeah I'm also a huge fan of maples, though I don't think the budget will stretch to standard roses, weeping cherries *and* maples *sniffle* maybe next year thanks for your reply - I feel a lot better now Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 4Jul 13, 2010 3:04 pm Where are you? A lot of nurseries in melb dump their bare rooted stock for cheap at the end of winter, i picked up a 6 foot weeping birch for $12 last year and the cherries started at $20 for 6 foot at aummans in templestowe. Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 5Jul 13, 2010 3:10 pm south eastern suburbs of melbourne. i didn't want to do the standard roses that way (i've picked up some roses cheap for mum at the end of winter - i used to work for the big green shed) because i was worried about not finding the colours i was after. i'll keep my eyes out for marked down weeping cherries (though they're so popular they don't usually make it to the end of winter) - i'll even drive to templestowe if they're only $20!! i'm also waiting til the end for bare rooted fruit trees - yummy Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 6Jul 13, 2010 3:34 pm Aumanns for the past few years have 60% the last weekend of bare rooted stock and there was plenty of weeping stock left & heaps of cherries. I am sure other nurseries do it but aummans advertise it quite heavy in the local magizines and papers. Re: Roses and Weeping Cherries 8Aug 27, 2010 10:11 pm Sales are on right now everyone...
