We have a spot underneath the kitchen window. We tried herbs and the basil ran wild, we tried lavender, but the weeds overgrew it in weeks. It gets sun for the early mornings, but it's in shade by about 10.30. Also, it's protected from the rain, so doesn't always get as much water as the rest of the garden. The native violets sound appealing. Can anyone see any issues for me? Re: 100% shade...am I doomed? 25Apr 06, 2011 2:06 am I have spent 5 years trying to remove Liriope from one garden of mine. Drives me crazy. they look all innocent and cute when planted. Then they go mental and take over. Re: 100% shade...am I doomed? 26Apr 06, 2011 6:09 am This one is lovely and will do well:http://www.igarden.com.au/plant-type.jsp?t=Plectranthus It's a different plectranthus to the one mentioned above. Re: 100% shade...am I doomed? 27May 05, 2011 6:07 am To form a lawn in Australia it needs to spread. All successful lawns do. Buffalo, Zoysia, Couch, Kikuyu. A shade lawn id no different. It needs to spread. Liriope Isabella spreads. Thats why it works. I have had no problem, with it growing around plants for many years. It is low growing, so as long as you have plants that are 300mm high it works great with them, and does not out compete them. Fu you must be using the wrong Liriope, as Isabella is great as a ground cover. It is unique. You should try it. It is the only low growing fine leaf spreading one that can be mown once per year. It is very different than Liriope spicata. It is a Liriope muscari, the only spreading fine leaf type in the world. Make sure you put pavers between it to walk on. 100% shade...am I doomed? 28May 05, 2011 9:44 pm Sounds good mate. I dont think these liriopes were planted originally as a ground cover What about a mass planting of lomandra little con? I posted somewhere the other day, a link to a lawn alternative website. Pretty sure it was associated with garden rant. Re: 100% shade...am I doomed? 29May 09, 2011 9:33 am Lomandra is too tall as a lawn alternative. To be a good lawn alternative, I believe the plant must be self repairing, and very low growing. Spreading is a must to last a long time. Even Mini Mondo spreads a little. That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17724 |
