Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 28, 2010 2:10 pm Looking to A- lay some pebbles in a garden bed, and B- lay some pebbles down the side of the house, with stepping stones every 500mm centre to centre. A:What is best to lay under the pebbles for the garden. At the moment i have filled the area with Sandy Loam ready for Turf, but have changed my mind and want pebbles. with a small tree and a few small plants. Is it best to lay a crushed rock, lilydale topping etc, or keep the soil (i can use it elsewhere) B: for the side of the house, i have a 10-15mm depth to fill before i put pebbles in. Cost of pebbles restricts me to fill entire area with pebbles, again would a crushed rock/lilydale topping be best, and lay pebbles on top of this? will stepping stones/pavers be ok on crushed rock/lilydale topping? Thanks in advance for your comments. Toppings on their own, to suppress weeds and get rid of the mud along the side of the house: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As for pebbles in garden beds.... there's a lot of info about that here. It isn't going to do your plants any good at all, and is actually less low-maintenance than mulch when it comes to weed growth. Pebbles as a feature look great - but as 100% coverage for garden beds won't do your garden any favours. Have a read of Fu's posts about mulch, soil preparation and so on. Lots of good advice there. Re: What to layunder under pebbles and stepping stones 3Jun 29, 2010 3:53 pm I would suggest you move the good soil to a garden area that could do with it. Pebbles are hard to walk on and expensive, they get kicked around and weeds grow through easily. Perhaps an alternative is a 100mm layer of Lilydale toppings or similar, packed down. When I put in a garden bed or other surface I have used carpet underlay underneath for weed suppression. It has to be the old hair underlay or 100% wool carpet (bio degradable). Cheers Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16156 I want to build a bigger driveway (without a nature strip) than has been approved under my CDC. I’ve also had a DA approved to build a deck. It looks like I can do this… 0 4813 |
