Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 21, 2010 10:47 pm Hi all, I was just wondering what do people normally do for their garden in new homes. More specifically, all the rock left over from construction. There is heaps of stones and some bigger rocks left over. Should we remove just the big ones and leave the smaller ones? Then buy soil and cover it? Re: New Home.. 2Jun 22, 2010 12:07 am I would put the rocks in the trading post or quokka (for West Aussies). Also research Japanese and Chinese rock gardens and landscapes. This may very well be a blessing in disguise. There are some of Australia's most special gardens done from an abundance of rocks. The very best advice for any landscape is to sit back, think, ponder and watch that bare bit of dirt for a while before you decide on anything. Watch the light, watch the shaddows as the day goes by. See what birds and wildlife visit. How does the wind move through your property? How do you want it to move? These are all the very things you must think about when landscaping. It about shaping and moulding what you have available that creates the very best of what we see. Re: New Home.. 3Jun 22, 2010 12:21 am Hi Fu Manchu Thanks for the response and i can see that you have helped out many people in this forum so am very appreciate of you taking the time to help me. I think your response is perhaps one or two steps ahead of where I am now. I'm looking for a simple and typical garden with just grass lawn and plant some veggies on a small patch. I was just wondering what I needed to do if anything before I lay the grass? Re: New Home.. 5Jun 22, 2010 12:46 am What is often misunderstood is the use of lawns. The general population view it as something like carpet that covers the soil. However the reality is it is the Formula one car of the garden. Expensive on the environment, expensive on the owner, expensive to maintain and you will need to ensure where it is used is done so to best effect after alternatives have been sort Fake turf is worse still. If you are unsure of what to do just yet then I would seriously consider natural much to 100mm thickness first. Lawn isn't an effective quick fix. Mulch is. The tree lopper mulch is going to stop mud, and mess. It won't blow about and will begin to compost at the soil surface which creates wonderful new soil from organic material. When you are ready to commit to something more you can dig this stuff through and it will be wonderful for building the soils structure and breaking the clays up a bit In sands it will help to bind sand together. Organic material can achieve some beautiful things Re: New Home.. 6Jun 22, 2010 8:23 am Re: New Home.. 8Jun 22, 2010 11:20 am Thanks, 10 cubes of mulch, 14 Railway Sleepers, and a dozen or so plants and made for a good result for not a lot of cash. Re: New Home.. 10Jun 22, 2010 2:41 pm Re: New Home.. 12Jun 23, 2010 2:17 pm Knockitdown that looks bloody brilliant! good job Hopefully my garden willl look half as nice Fu, Had a read of the thread you mentioned, still going through it and only read the first few pages so far but are you saying to lay mulch instead of cultivating and getting soil first? Using the mulch as soil later on? and then cultivating/compacting once it composts(any idea how long?)? Should I go through mulchnet? Wonder how long it would take..hrmm...would be happy to pay for delivery. Re: New Home.. 13Jun 23, 2010 3:14 pm Re: New Home.. 14Jun 23, 2010 3:42 pm I just checked your blog. Nice tie in between the Sleepers and your Windows and Garage. It will look fantastic when it's finished. I wanted to do the same thing with a 2 x sleeper terrace at the front of my place but time was the deciding factor for me as I needed to get the slope covered asap so it didn't wash away.
