Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 21, 2010 10:44 am I need some suggestions about what to do outside down one side of our house.... One side of our house will be about 1800mm from the fence (wider in a couple of parts). This is the side of the house where our laundry door is, where our clothes line will be, our hot water system, air-con unit, bins, fire wood stockpile and also where we want to encourage our small dog to go to the toilet. It is not going to get alot of sun so we are really unsure what to do with this side of the house We do want to have a small garden (approx 500mm wide) where we are going to plant some sort of heding plant, but what to put in the rest of the space (about 1200 wide), we have no idea. Here are the options we have come up with - Sir Walter Grass (but we are concerned that it will not grow) - Paving (not great if we want the good to use that side of the house) - Stone with stepping stone pavers (again not good with the dog) - Concrete (ugly and not good with the dog) What other options do we have? Painting finished, time to tile! HANDOVER - THURSDAY 3RD MARCH 2011 Re: What to do with the side of our house? 2Jun 22, 2010 12:39 am I would be making the call to cover a big part of that and using it for shelter and function, such as drying clothes undercover. Or having a garden bed at least 600mm wide and creating a hedge of anything but bush Christmas and boring lilypillys Pave the rest upto the house Narrower garden beds will be too expensive and counter productive to get ahead with. Re: What to do with the side of our house? 3Jun 28, 2010 11:45 am I have laid Sir Walter buffalo grass down the sides of several homes. If the location is able to recieve roughly 3-4 hours of sunlight then Sir Walter should grow there. Dogs also really enjoy the turf and if the little fella is a bit of a digger the turf will repair itself. Good luck, hopefully I was helpful. Nick. Re: What to do with the side of our house? 4Jul 27, 2010 2:44 pm Hi Rebecca Nick's right, Sir Walter is one of the most shade tolerant varieties of grass available. As long as it get sunlight for any part of the day, you should be fine in growing it there - and it sounds like that's what you really want! Since it will be in a fairly shady area, you should mow the grass a bit higher and try to keep it clear of any build-up of leaf litter - let it get as much photosynthesis done as possible! I have a webisode posted on YouTube about keeping your Sir Walter lawn healthy under shady conditions - you can see it at http://www.youtube.com/user/loveyourlaw ... wwnmpgbSZY Have a great one, Nigel Re: What to do with the side of our house? 5Jul 27, 2010 4:58 pm Our dead side is a little larger than your area, but we did stones. There's nothing under them so our dogs wee just goes right through. We needed somewhere they could go and not get muddy when it was raining and horrible. I was sick of cleaning paws when they came back inside. Your area could get really muddy, so would be a pain if the dog was coming inside after doing it's busines. We'll eventually put a clothesline and some pavers here, but it's in effect our utility area (hot water service, water tank eventually) and dead side.
