Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 12, 2010 11:50 am Hi All Frontyard done and now off to backyard. will post the pictures of front yard soon. But need some urgent help here as i am going to buy/order materials for backyard soon. I want to make pathways of lilydale toppings in my backyard and the area will be around 3m x 5m on both sides. Because we have clay soil and had serious problem of woody weeds in our backyard (these suckers wont die off with round up as well), i just cant think of doing anything without the weedmat. I am thinking of putting down 75mm - 100mm of compacted crushed rock base and then topping over with lilydale topping, but cant figure out where to put weedmat. So, can some help me with the application of weedmat with Lilydale topping Thanks Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 2Jun 12, 2010 12:38 pm I don't know what kind of woody weeds you have, but there's a product called "woody weed killer" that's used on blackberries and tree stumps. I'm sure there are other brands of the same chemical, so it probably has several names. This is one: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As for the weedmat, we didn't bother and we don't find weeds to be a huge problem in our toppings. You're always going to get surface weeds as seeds blow in - you just have to pull 'em out or spray with Roundup every now and then. I do a weed patrol every couple of weekends or so, takes me about five minutes to go round the whole front and back yard and pull the little buggers out before they get any bigger than about 1-2cm. If you're not prepared to do it that often, it'll take longer to do on a less regular basis. I don't find it a problem - if I'm collecting the mail or putting rubbish in the bin I do a quick check around and just grab any that I see. Sorry I can't help with the weedmat question. Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 3Jun 13, 2010 8:29 am I am happy if the weeds at my place are as easy as yours. Problem is that I live next to reserve and that's how weeds find their way in. I am aware that weedmat is not going to fully eradicate the problem as well. However, my next door neighbours have used it and they still get some surface weeds, however it's as easy as pulling them out once in a week or fortnight. I am really keen on spreading lilydale topping, however can't figure out how to install weedmat with it Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 4Jun 13, 2010 8:31 am Don't bother with the weed mat if you are compacting 100mm of road base plus the toppings. Weed mat works well for thin layers of pebbles/decorative mulch to stop them sinking and mixing with the existing soil and that's about it. I had the stuff everywhere and it certainly does not stop the round up resistant woody sort of weeds like ivy or blackberries. Get the area under control with amgro then lay your paths. Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 5Jun 13, 2010 6:16 pm Hi Thanks for the reply. Pardon my ignorance but wat's Amgro and how does it work and how to apply it Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 6Jun 13, 2010 6:29 pm homeishome Hi Thanks for the reply. Pardon my ignorance but wat's Amgro and how does it work and how to apply it Amgrow is the product I posted a picture of. You follow the instructions on the label re dilution and spray it on the nasties. Ask your local nursery - they may stock a different brand, but they're sure to have a suitable product. And they'll be able to tell you how to use it if you're not sure. Re: How to control weeds in Lilydale Topping 7Jun 14, 2010 12:47 am Hit the search function for how to spray and with what. Often the right sprays are used but in the wrong way. Ed will tell you that after changinga small thing he went form moderate success to excellent success There is loads of info already here on spraying and covering this topic To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
