Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 11, 2010 9:00 pm I need experts' help to see if I can save my newly bought potted jasmins, or should I let them go . They are in 30cm pots, recently bought. On some, leaves are yellowing and feel dry/dead to touch. They could need repotting into more (and better) soil, but is there hope for those plants? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Orange Jasmin (Murraya paniculata) with yellowing leaves 2Jun 12, 2010 11:59 am I've got 3 in the ground, that are doing the same thing! Number one is already dead, number 3 is starting to show yellow leaves lower down and number 2 (in the middle) is looking ok at the moment. But I don't know what the problem is either. Re: Orange Jasmin (Murraya paniculata) with yellowing leaves 3Jun 12, 2010 7:41 pm Oh, no!!! This is now critical and I'm getting right to the point - I think we need Fu !!! I hope he's watching I'll also change the thread name to (try to) grab his attention My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 4Jun 12, 2010 9:37 pm Maybe u brought the plant to ask the nursery if it's normal for that type of plant to have yellow leaves at that time. I recently learnt that even evergreens will have yellow leaves and shedding some of the leaves. Some plants will have some leaves ( maybe bottom part) shedded cos of cold. That instance maybe even more obvious if the plants are kept in greenhouses/ under shade cloth and then u bought it and put it outdoor. Perhaps be a bit patient and still planted them in as u planned and wait for spring to see how they are turning. Sorry I'm still a novice in gardening. Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 5Jun 13, 2010 8:21 am I have 3 of them and only bought them this year. They seem fairly robust, the one in the garden has already had a light frost and been stomped on by the 3 year old several times. They are all going fine. Are the pots getting water logged? Over winter pots out in the open don't have a chance to drain off properly and some leaves on some plants go yellow (citrus especially). Move them to some cover, add some seasol and check if there is any roots coming out the bottom of the pot and re-pot if necessary. Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 6Jun 13, 2010 9:01 am Lex would you be able to please tell us the exact botanical name from the tag of the plants that you bought as common names get very confused sometimes, especially these ones. Do you mean Murraya paniculata? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 7Jun 13, 2010 9:20 am themax Lex would you be able to please tell us the exact botanical name from the tag of the plants that you bought as common names get very confused sometimes, especially these ones. Do you mean Murraya paniculata? That's what I was assuming, themax.... sometimes called "Orange Jessamine" (not jasmine though, different plant. ). Some people call it "Mock Orange", which is confusing, because that's generally a different plant altogether. I have one in a pot outside, horribly pot-bound, that I haven't had a chance to plant out yet (mainly because I'm too damn indecisive about where to put it ). Anyway, we've had rain bucketing down for weeks, colder temps than usual for June, and it's a happy as a pig in you-know-what. No yellow leaves. I'd take BeatrixKiddo's advice, Lex - give them some shelter under trees and some Seasol and wait.... Fu must be super-busy at the moment - haven't seen him in ages. Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 8Jun 13, 2010 2:02 pm Lex, were they sold to you like that? Maybe you could post a pick? Is the soil glistening when you water them, and the water beading and running off (as opposed to soaking in)? Maybe the soil has become repellent and the water is not reaching the root ball, it may be running down the insides of the pot and out the drainage holes. Take them out of the pots and have a good look. What can you see? Is it bone dry? Is it water logged? Does it smell weird? Maybe they have way outgrown the pots and depleted all goodness from the mix the are in? Have a look and tell us what you see. Really need a piccy or some more info I think. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 9Jun 13, 2010 2:08 pm themax Lex, were they sold to you like that? I'm going to start calling you Peter Cundall, themax (although you're a lot prettier than him). You sound very knowledgeable. Very funny. Now I'm jealous. We visited his veggie garden at the botanic gardens in Hobart about 6-7 years ago, when he was still doing Gardening Australia. Very impressive. Sorry Lex ...back to the topic. Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 12Jun 13, 2010 2:24 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Shocker photo of me. Shocker. I said you were prettier than him.... Sorry Lex.... *tiptoes away* Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 14Jun 13, 2010 8:23 pm Hey thanks, gals, all of you!!! I've been naughty and wasn't even looking here, but more importantly, didn't describe "the case" in more detail OK, the truth is (and this is not my fault entirely, of course , as someone here on H1 has (although completely unknowingly and innocently) "prompted" me to .... errrr .... yes, buy online which is a real shocker as I never ever bought anything online before !! So I went I got several Murraya paniculatas (sorry tm, yes, this name was actually in the original title of this thread but I deleted it so that I can fit Fu in instead I also purposely spelt it the shorter way and didn't bother checking if those are actually different plants! ) and to my disappointment it looks like I'm the rare one who got yellow plant or two (of course ). It does look like it's dieing, since the yellow leaves are rigid (losing / lost water and life, I'd say). The pot has shockingly small amount of soil too, though it's not water repelent. The plan is to repot them ASAP (I only got them on Friday!), but I was wondering if this is some known and documented disease that I could treat at the same time as repotting ... or should I accept the fate (there are no returns). Hmmm ... what else did I forget to say Aha, no pics yet, I could tomorrow. They are about 1/2 m high, pot size 30cm. And I did a quick Google on this, but nothing came out specifically related to murrayas. We had a few of these plants before (demolished with the house) and one of them was always yellowish, but the leaves were never rigid. ... Hmmmm, now I think I sound like a child who's asking if his dead bird will fly again ... Oh and yeah, Pete is very popular in this house! How amazing that you met him, tm, and thank you for the lovely photo! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 15Jun 13, 2010 8:40 pm If it was me ...I think that the minimal amount of soil is restricting the amount of moisture available to the roots. The soil is the sponge that holds the water and nutrients that supply the plants through the roots. So if you have a pot full of roots and little soil, the water runs straight through because there is not enough soil to hold and reservoir the water for the plant to draw on. So if it were my plant I would 1/3 fill a bucket with Seasol diluted with water (as per instructions) put the pot in it and let it soak it up. Don't drown it, just let it soak it up. (edit- enough to soak the existing roots and soil only) Then tomorrow I would pot them ASAP up to a size or two bigger in fresh good quality mix. Tickle the roots a bit to get them moving into the new soil. Let them rest and recover. When they start growing again pot up again when you see roots at the drainage holes. Are they meant to be going into the ground? I wouldn't feed them with a fertiliser until they start to recover and you see new foliage has grown. The Seasol is a tonic and should help them stimulate root growth. That's just my take on it without pics to see. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 16Jun 13, 2010 11:58 pm Did you get to meet Colin Campbell? He is awesome. Taught me a bit here and there He's so funny Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 17Jun 14, 2010 8:15 am Oh hello Fu! Hope you don't mind my post above. I waited to see if you would respond but you must be extra busy. No I didn't get to meet Colin Campbell, what a shame. He looks like a great guy too. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 18Jun 14, 2010 8:56 am Hey, thanks, themax! That sounds like a very good plan to me - I wasn't even thinking of Seasol .. I will give it a go. Maybe I can also spray the leaves with Seasol (diluted)? Yes, they are meant to go into ground once we are in. I thought of buying some beforehand, repot and nurture them so that they "can't wait" to be planted into freedom and maybe even grow a little by then Hey Fu, welcome back! You do sound very busy Hope all is fine with you ! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 19Jun 14, 2010 9:28 am Yes you can use Seasol on the foliage. The plants will love it. You should also get up every morning kiss them and sing Good Morning Sunshine to them. I hear this helps them feel nurtured and wanted. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Orange Jasmine very SICK - Please HELP, Fu !!!!!!!!!!!! 20Jun 14, 2010 10:15 am themax Yes you can use Seasol on the foliage.
