Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 30, 2010 4:56 pm We have a brazier & an old fire grate which we use for a fire when we are entertaing outside but after looking at the 2 patches of burned grass this morning, I think I will need to build a fire pit for the new house. I did consider an in ground pit but am a bit concerend for safety (after a few drinks ) so think something maybe 1/2 in the ground may be better? We seem to have raging fires ...dont ask who ventured down at 1.30am to our build & bought home many pieces of off cut wood to burn when we ran out of the 'good' stuff (chemicals? what chemicals - cough cough) so something with a bit of depth is needed I think. So - show me your fire pit - or your designs please? Cheers Kim Re: Anyone built a fire pit? 2May 31, 2010 9:17 pm We don't have a fire pit, but when an uncle of mine had a beach house a few years ago a fire was going almost constantly in the back yard. It was basically a wood barbecue in a sand bed, with a pivoting grill and hot plate. Eggs & bacon never tasted so good, especially after a big night! Firstly looking back to his house from the fire, and secondly in his outdoor kitchen/dining area. Hopefully all these pics give you some inspiration! Brick lined circular pits about 600mm deep with a camp hoist swing arm hot plate and hook arm for your billy. Not long after state forests and NT Parks started installing the swing arms on most of their best camp sites. I guess for a major BBQ a bigger hot plate is required but for camping these things are awesome. Re: Anyone built a fire pit? 6Jun 07, 2010 11:43 am There are some small (1m2) steel/enamel freestanding pits advertised in the Stratco catalogue that found its way into the letterbox on the weekend. Might be worth checking out, and they were pretty cheap.
