Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 14, 2010 11:44 am Hey Fu and others I am on the lookout for a plant that will grow well in pretty much full shade - due to shadowing of the house etc the spot I want them in for my front yard receives little to no sun These plants will be on the fenceline, next door is the neighbour's driveway so I can't have anything too tall as it will block their view when reversing out etc, I don't mind a bit of height, but really would like a splash of colour and something to fit in with a garden of basically yuccas/cordylines etc The two I have researched a bit and like are: - Chocolate Lily (arthropodium strictum) - Purple Flag (Patersonia occidentalis) Fu, can you tell me if these will grow with little to no sun or am I wasting my time? The other one I saw was the clivia but I had it in my mind this needed atleast partial sun.... Thanks for any help My karma ran over your dogma Re: A question... 2May 14, 2010 11:57 am haywgl The other one I saw was the clivia but I had it in my mind this needed atleast partial sun.... Nope, clivias are fine in full shade. They get used a lot under trees and along side passages where there isn't much light. You might get less flowers..... Re: A question... 3May 14, 2010 12:11 pm Thanks Kek I really like the look of the clivia - I'm just wondering it wasn't enough height for me - Ideally I would like about 1-2m in height. I just found a site that said purple flag needed full sun, so that is out!! Gee this is hard..... My karma ran over your dogma Re: A question... 4May 14, 2010 12:21 pm Meant to add I did see a plant/tree thing I loved the look of - it was about 1.5-2m tall and was green with red on the leaves too - it was very simple looking sort of straight up - they were planted in a row next to a house but I have no idea what they were called!! Or if they can grow in shade....would anyone know what I am talking about? EDIT - I think I found it - Photinia Glabra Rubens (Japanese Photinia) - dammit full sun needed! My karma ran over your dogma Re: A question... 5May 14, 2010 12:54 pm hi haywgl - another plant that loves shade and can easily be clipped to whatever shape etc is a croton. I don't know if they grow where you are though? i am in SEQ and they don't like frosts too much but we only get one or two a year. just google 'croton' and it comes up with heaps of types and colours. or maybe a type of NZ flax? they can be colourful and grow about 1m or a bit more? edit: just did some quick research and these are better suited to colder climates. there are some lovely pictures on google images too. they prefer sun but will grow in almost full shade. Dianellas, maybe? Or do they need sun too? Now I'm confused.... Kyiee, I don't think crotons would survive outdoors in Melbourne. They'd be more of an indoor plant here. Re: A question... 7May 14, 2010 1:00 pm Ok, how tall is the fence? If the neighbour's view when exiting their driveway is a concern, I'm assuming it's one of those low fences...? How about growing a row of something as a hedge and keeping it clipped to just above fence height? Camellias, maybe? Re: A question... 8May 14, 2010 1:04 pm I better hide then! I am sure Fu will be able to come up with many more options! i have some dianellas in my garden I forgot to suggest them too. they are nice plants. I better go search NZ flax on here.... Best not to mention them... What about Fu's favourite, Murraya Paniculata? White flowers, glossy leaves, perfumed....it could be kept trimmed to whatever height you want. Hedge it or keep them as separate shrubs, whichever you prefer. Re: A question... 11May 14, 2010 3:15 pm Murraya looks better with some sun Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: A question... 12May 14, 2010 4:36 pm I'm sure Fu posted all about growing Murrayas in the shade. Clipping them will stop them getting all straggly... I'll see if I can find it. Re: A question... 13May 14, 2010 4:45 pm This isn't the thread I was thinking of, but the Fu-meister has recommended a few plants for along Mrs B's shady side fence: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=20755&p=268688&hilit=murraya+shade#p268688 If you can't be bothered scrolling through all the posts, he suggested Murraya, Abutilon (you'll know it as Chinese Lantern), Hibiscus and Acalypha wilkesiana. He posted photos too, so it's worth a read. The area Mrs B wanted to plant has a higher fence, but I think all of those will stand pruning. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9960 I would say both styles you have pictured are steel.
