We need one wall 30m long, approx 800mm high, one 21m long, 800mm high, and one 20m long, 700mm high. The 21m wall must be masonry (estate covenants) and will need to have masonry pillars 1.8m high, 2 bricks wide on top of it for the fence, so we would like all of the walls to be the same construction (masonry walls, but not the pillars - they just go down the one side). I have initially been told $390 per square metre of wall for bricked and bagged. Is this a reasonable price? We also have thought about sourcing some/all of the bricks ourselves, and have been told that he will just take off the cost of the bricks that he doesn't use to cater for any that we supply (apparently he gets them for $500-600 per 1000). Where can we find places for cheap common bricks (I found somewhere in Ingleburn for 50c a brick, and they can deliver for a price) We are in Sydney, near Liverpool Re: Pricing for retaining walls 2May 11, 2010 2:14 pm A few years ago I got plain bricks from Austral for about 35c a brick. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 3May 11, 2010 2:22 pm bricks have goone up. Unless you can get them really cheap it doesn look like you will be saving much. I think these the bricks ususally start from about 450 per 1000. Would be interested to know if anyone can get them cheaper. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 4May 15, 2010 8:43 pm If you were in Wodonga you would be alright, seems like the trend is leave all your left over bricks onto the neighbouring vacant blocks. The block diagonally across from the rear of us must have near 500 bricks on it, all still palleted, left overs from several houses around it. Maybe you could pick up some really cheap ones if you went for a drive around the new estates and offer to buy the leftovers. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 5May 17, 2010 4:37 pm talking about retaining walls - any idea what sort of costs they charge in Perth for limestone retaining? I need quite a bit of retaining done ranging from 40cm to 1m so if anybody has some prices for Perth would be great. Your feedback will be usefull. Thanks Re: Pricing for retaining walls 7Nov 03, 2010 9:25 pm One quote 6.7k. Wall about 800 high, about 11.5m long, plus 2 returns each about 4m long and coming to zero height. Tasman block. Includes 4 stairs with (I think all) the capping. Is this reasonable?? I got quoted just over $13K (Mates Rates) for my wall which is over double the length of yours. As you know I did the big DIY on my wall and spent just over $6K on the whole job. Does your quote indicate what material is going to be used for the footing? Road Base? etc. Also does the Quote include excavation for the footing, Ag pipe and gravel for drainage? What about Backfilling behind the wall? Have you considered that you may have excess fill to remove once the wall is done? I had about 6 Tonne of excess fill to remove once my wall went up. Rgds Leonard. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 9Nov 04, 2010 8:58 pm Thanks, Leonard OK, I just noticed that my post omits other important details, which you raised. So, the quote basically says "Supply and install Tasman retaining wall system as per manufacturers’ instructions, including Tasman capping and bullnose capping for stair treads." It also says (in the "preparation" section of the quote) "Excavate all wall footings" and "Stockpile material for backfilling" - no idea if this relates to road base, gravel etc. It also says "Supply and install 100mm agricultural drain pipe surrounded by aggregate to the rear of retaining walls and connect to stormwater or a drainage pit. Supply and install bidim geotextiles to the rear of the retaining walls." So I guess it's everything? Well, we did ask for everything as we don't have the time or resources, or even skill. Although, he wouldn't build a concrete base for the wall , just sand base (or road base, whatever is the rule). And I remember very well that you reverted to cement base pretty quickly I think he said that sand base is better (I guess for our case), but can't remember why (and I can't remember because his reasons didn't make sense to me at the time (and I can't remember them either!!! )) My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Pricing for retaining walls 10Nov 05, 2010 7:59 am Hi Lex, Yep I tried Roadbase but due to lots of big rock I struggled getting it all level. I removed the roadbase and went with concrete. Roadbase for this type of wall works in most situations but just not in my particular situation. Having said that, I have some more wall to do around the back of the house out of Tasman Blocks and will be sitting that wall on the roadbase I reclaimed from my side wall. Your Quote seems to include everything you need. I wouldn't stress too much if there is left over fill that wont fit back behind the wall. Just stick a "Free Clean Fill" sign up out the front and it will be gone before you know it. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 11Nov 05, 2010 10:13 am Hahaha, good point about the fill! Actually, when we were digging something in our front yard some years ago, some passers by asked us to take our (miniature) "fill" and plug some holes on a nature strip a few streets away ( what some people dare to ask !!! ). And of course I failed to say that he would charge us for ag pipe and stuff and some excavation for the footings - approx. 3k more on top of 6.7k. This is in a different section of the quote, but is obviously essential to complete the wall ... so all up close to 10k. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Pricing for retaining walls 12Nov 06, 2010 8:07 am You could cut that by at least half if you DIY. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 14Nov 06, 2010 3:43 pm It's a relatively small job. That's why the quote is the price it is. Re: Pricing for retaining walls 15Nov 07, 2010 7:15 am Oh, he quoted another 25k for some other landscaping work With us, if it's a "small" job, they overcharge because it's small. If it's big, they waaay overcharge too because .... they can, I suppose ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ...
