Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 08, 2010 9:17 pm Hi, I'm in Melbourne, with a new property - soil is fairly average, though I've done all the tricks and tips Fu mentioned. Looking at garden plans and getting trees and shrubs in. When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shrubs? I've heard it's now (May), as it gives them a few weeks to settle in, and by Spring, they're ready to go forth and grow. Then again, the nursery guy I spoke to said that they only sold plums etc around June/July and that's when the planting should be? Thoughts? slooi1 Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 2May 09, 2010 12:13 am for most plants this is a good time but for many trees that are sold bare rooted june/july is the time plants are available. For example I'm looking at some deciduous trees and they are available here locally as barerooted plants in july and not before hand. Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 3May 09, 2010 10:41 am I have no probs planting all through winter, if you are in a frost zone then i would suggest not planting anything frost senstive without some protection. Also just make sure if you have clay it doesn't get too boggy in july/august for what you are planting, just raise the plantings a bit. As for deciduous fruit trees they are just cheaper in winter because there is less labour in potting them up. You can plant them all year round, its just way cheaper bare rooted. You can still buy plums etc the rest of the year in pots they just cost 2/3 more. Planting now means the plants have plenty time to establish and get a good long growing first season. Obviously if you are planting sub-tropical stuff that likes a dry winter then i wouldn't be putting much into the ground till later spring. Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 4May 12, 2010 9:39 am Planting in the cooler months sure saves a lot of watering. By summer the plants have had time to root out. If you live in a windy area it is worth getting the plants in quickly as August and September winds make things more difficult. Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 5May 12, 2010 10:22 am I've been putting plants in since the end of summer and am still going. People have told me not to plant this at that time and what not, but I havn't seemd to have any problems. I do however spend alot of time doing good soil prep and i monitor the plants very very carefully for tell tale signs of too much or to little of something. Water is one of your biggest dangers. Too much is just as bad as too little. Oh and if wind is going to be a problem (i live in a very very windy area in melbourne) I stake my plants. I know its not good to stake young plants cuase they dont build strength themsevles but I use my wifes old stockings and not too tighly. This gives them moveability in the wind and allows them to build up some strength. When they become established, I remove the hoisery! Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 7May 13, 2010 12:41 pm Now is a great time to do soil prep cuase there is plenty of rain about and the soil should be nice and soft. Becuase it so soft, stake ur plants. until spring, and if safe, take the stakes off so they can establish themselves but leave teh stake in posotion incase wind picks up. Hopefully they'll be fine for spring time. persevere with them. Some can look like they are dying right away but they will come back around. Just give them plenty of attention. apparently plants can feel stuff. Re: When's the best time of the year to plant trees and shru 8Jun 17, 2010 12:01 am autumn winter and early spring at a pinch. It's always amazed me how we don't recognise in Australia we have more than 4 seasons in most places and that we still follow European tradition of spring being the time to garden Autumn and winter Here in SW WA we have 5 distinct seasons One of which has been prolonged. The black cockies on the coastal plain will herald it in. I only just saw some ducks flying North the other day Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10208 A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
