Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 03, 2010 2:07 pm Had our driveway done a few weeks back and we now have a large excess of sand where our lawn will eventually be. We'll want our lawn 'flush' up against our driveway, so what kind of levels do I need - considering we'll need a fair amount of soil conditioning to be done (plan to mix 50% in to the sand) and roll on EZ. Our pavers are 60mm driveway pavers so I was going to get a bobcat to remove the sand to the base of the pavers - how does that sound? I have no idea how much soil conditioner I'll need but. We're in Piara Waters (Harrisdale-ish) which is sand, sand sandy. Any advice? CHeers! Re: How much dirt to remove? 2May 03, 2010 4:30 pm I hate to say it but that isn't how turf laying works Each cut of the turf (depending on supplier and machine used) will have varying thicknesses. All you need to do is have the area levelled pretty much. Just rake the soil a little lower around the edges. Flick it out so there will be an unnoticeable drop against the edge of the drive Leave what you have and import soil in. Mix to a depth of 200-400mm with a rotary hoe/tiller. Use what you have and avoid defined soil layers. ie. don't take out sand or soil or clay and replace with a rich layer of organic compost. This is a very bad idea. Browse through the turf laying summary. Get in touch with Lovegrove turf farm for the EZ. Budget for Bentonite clay, zeolite and spongolite to be added also. These are permanent soil amendments and will ensure the soil is at it's best and you will also have trouble free EZ http://www.lovegroveturf.com/contact-lo ... -perth.htm Re: How much dirt to remove? 3May 03, 2010 5:30 pm Fu Manchu I hate to say it but that isn't how turf laying works Each cut of the turf (depending on supplier and machine used) will have varying thicknesses. I definitely dont intend to just put the soil on top, I will be mixing it with existing sand. Just unsure how much sand I should tell the bobcat driver to remove. Might drop into Lovegrove on the way home from work, thanks Re: How much dirt to remove? 5May 04, 2010 1:05 pm I'm not convinced We removed an amazing amount of sand from our front lawn area - by wheelbarrow I so wish we'd just got it done by bobcat. The builders and the driveway guys left so much sand there that we'd have a huge stupid hump out the front if we hadn't. Or if we'd levelled out the existing sand, the mulch in the beds around the edge would be like 20cm above the pavers and up the walls. We did remove a little too much in the end because I allowed for bringing in about 10cm compost and we didn't have enough at the time. Only other regret is not doing that a couple of weeks in advance to allow it to settle (and give us time to compact and level properly without bogging the compactor ), which would have allowed a much flatter finish. Doing it again I think I'd remove sand to only a couple of cm below the bottom of the pavers. Re: How much dirt to remove? 6May 04, 2010 2:11 pm Yep met with a 'bobcat guy' thismorning - going to do go down to about 4 inches below the pavers. It's a **** of sand...about 60m2 of sand that is currently 10-30cm above the paving at the moment. About 3 truckloads worth we reckon. We definitely don't want lawn that is a lot higher than our driveway. Thanks for the tip about allowing the soil etc to settle Costing a small fortune but we're just going to do it, already had 2 weeks off this past month for a crook back then there is the issue of what to do with all the sand. Another bonus is that the bobcat has pallete forks so he can move our 117mu2 of pavers for us Re: How much dirt to remove? 7May 04, 2010 2:43 pm I would remove the correct amount to leave the bottom of your blade on your grass about flush with the top of your paver, or a little lower. You can always top dress up the level of your lawn, but going the other way ie dropping your lawn down is a lot of work ( remove turf, excavate underrneath, re-level, relay turf and top dress up to required level). Allow a bit for compaction. This is of course after you have prepared your soil as per turf laying thread. Re: How much dirt to remove? 9May 04, 2010 7:22 pm I think you guys might be over estimating the amount of subsistence in the soil once this has been done. I would never look at how much soil to remove to get turf heights right. Mowers, edgers and time will change all that anyway. How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents?
