Almost time for us to move into our house!!!
Anyway we are in Sydney and I am wanting to have some Turf layed at least in the backyard. Hubby is worried it won't survive winter?
Any suggestions recommendations.
Thanks

Grasses like Buffalo, couch, kikuyu etc go somewhat dormant during the colder months and lose some colour and stop growing. If you are laying it during this time, it won't properly take to the soil below till it starts warming again, but will still remain alive and healthy. Just keep up the nutrients like seasol, still keep it moist if it dries out, and keep the weeds under control. You will get more weeds if laying it in winter as they won't have competition from the grass. Cool season grasses like fescue and ryegrass will establish in no time during winter and grow green quickly as they are cool season grasses, but they dry out pretty quick in summer. Some people top dress their buffalo's, couches etc during winter and throw some rye seed over the top to provide some green throughout the year, when the creeping grass will take over once the weather warms and the rye dies off. There are people within the turf industry that would like to see the end of these turfs. Please go for either SW, Palmetto or Empire Zoysia (there is much discussion and debate on for Victorians). There are loads of existing threads on this very question. Re: Laying Turf in Winter???? 4May 02, 2010 12:14 pm 2 of the major turf suppliers in Vic have actually stopped selling fescue and rye blends as instant turf, because of the high water need. A pity they are so water needy, as fescue is probably the best looking turf.
