Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 24, 2010 12:43 pm I thought about digging up the grass and doing something more creative with our nature strip, but now I've decided that the green is a nice contrast to the other surfaces in our front yard, so it's staying. I have no idea what type of grass(es) it is, the developer used one of those spray-on seeds. Looks like couch or kikuyu (?) but what would I know? It definitely has runners anyway. My plan now is to improve it and have a lush patch of lawn, and this is where I need help. I know zip about lawns, really - our lawn at the old place was a bit of a disgrace. More a bunch of mown weeds. We share the nature strip with a neighbour, since our driveways are on opposite sides, so I'll be working on the entire thing; probably about 25m long and 1.5m wide. -ish. The grass on our side isn't too awful, but the neighbour's side is pretty patchy. There are some weeds, but I don't fancy using a weed & feed type product, so I'll either dig them out or apply a bit of undiluted Roundup sparingly. The levels are a bit all over the place too, so I'll need to add some soil. Any advice is welcome, short of digging it up and installing turf. I'm so not doing that. Here's what I have amongst my weaponry: A few bags of Naked Farmer Molasses Olsen's Greenbio Powerfeed Seasol Blood & bone I also have some Munn's lawn repair.... I'm not sure if this is a good thing, or if plain old seed in combination with some of the above is better. So, what do I do next.....? What else do I need....? Help.... Re: The quest for a perfect nature strip - help please Fu? 2Apr 24, 2010 5:03 pm Have you thought about doing a cover of Grevillea Gin Gin Gem? That will provide a dark green cover that will need mowing with a rotary mower a few times a year only. From a distance it will look like the best lawn in the street. When it is in flower it will look like your nature strip is on fire Heaps of birds will love it It will also work out far cheaper than any turf both to plant and to maintain You will achieve the look you are after as well. Or mow your verge every bloody week or two with a turf. SW, Palmetto or my personal fav is Empire Zoysia I would look at getting a few rolls of each and cutting them into sections and planting them into the existing turf. You will end up with a mix. You won't have it all nice till mid spring starts warming up. You will need organic compost raked over the area in spring and levelled out to get the area presentable when the grass grows through. Now you're confusing me again Fu, just when I'd made up my mind.... I used to be indecisive, but now I'm just not sure. Re: The quest for a perfect nature strip - help please Fu? 4Apr 24, 2010 5:48 pm I'm filing that one away from future use - we have a strip about 3m wide on the side of the driveway which we'll need to do something with. Hubby abhorrs grass but loves ground covers, so he'll be pleased. And the birdies will be happy! My mobile phone ringtone is the call of the red wattlebird, so it might mean that I need to change it after the grevillia goes in Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Good stinking Re: The quest for a perfect nature strip - help please Fu? 5Apr 24, 2010 6:56 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Did you see this photo, V? http://grevilleas.com.au/grev28mp.html Re: The quest for a perfect nature strip - help please Fu? 6Apr 24, 2010 6:59 pm Too cool yes I did! We used a smaller qld builder who went bankrupt about 12 months after completion of ours. It was a shame as they were good and relatively cheap and I would have used… 3 4729 Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone has switched from a small square tile insert or normal square waste to a strip drain at all, and if so did the plumber or diy-er… 0 13143 |
