Is it hot where you are now? Do you water your new plant everyday? We're in 35 degreess heat and I just planted a row of Kay Parris, I'm wonderung if I should water everyday. Re: Hey Fu, check out my Little Gem Magnolia…… 68Jan 03, 2012 5:03 pm Hi gelatii…..yes very hot here today! The first thing I did when I got home from work was check my plants, especially the ones in pots. The little Gem is fine today as far as water goes. When I planted it yesterday I gave it a really good soaking, so it doesn’t need any water today. The best way to tell if a plants needs water is to dig through the top layer of soil, if’s really dry a fair way under, then water the plant and give it a good soaking. That’s should keep it going for a couple of days in the heat. It’s important to mulch and use a good soil filler when planting new tress or shrubs out and I like to dig in some Dynamic Lifter as well. This should provide good drainage for your plant as well and nutrients. I love gardening, it’s my hobby and I’m pretty fussy about how my lawns and gardens are kept. Later through the week I’ll post photos of the front of my house after nearly 3 years here, the front gardens have changed quite a bit. Looking forward to your front garden photos, I am just starting out and will be planting the front yard later this week. I might end up with one yet. I've bought another magnolia atm. Poor things is looking a bit burnt. Is it worth me mulching right underneath it to help keep the ground moist? Re: Hey Fu, check out my Little Gem Magnolia…… 72Jan 03, 2012 6:37 pm Hey kex, I always mulch around the base of my plants. The mulch I use is Sugar Cane…..I find it keeps the soil moist. When it starts to break down you can dig it into the soil then add a little more to the top. Notice the size of the hole I dug for my Gem, its quite big, wide and deep, all filled with potting mix, chock poo and sugar cane mulch. By the way, they say that the young Magnolias need a fair but of water in the first year they are planted. The minute you put it out in the sun it may struggle in the heat and sun. I was banned from unpotting them I told the ministry of war "Fu said".... but it just didnt work. SO ive done what i can. I added zeolite, olsens, perlite and naked farmer to what was there and have been feeding it with seasol/powerfeed/molasses mix one a month. When i feed them, even a little bit at a time, it just runs straight out the bottom of the pot so there is a problem... I stole the leftovers. They have improved but i dont expect miracles. I would like them to get bushy instead of just spindly. I would also like them to replace the four oversized trees that are along the back fence to give privacy. (Ive been warned off getting rid of them as well... but theyve grown too big!!) Any amount of water is better than nothing. To make them bushier, start snipping the ends of when their not flowering this promotes new growth. I'd take a good 6inches off. If you really want to help them and they do have to stay in the pots.....get bigger pots!!! Good luck, they look healthy. I tend to get carried away when i "snip" so a disaster could be looming... I would really love to plant them in the garden to replace those ugly trees (which drop crappy little flowers in the pool anyway!) Is your guttering still mission brown as well? Edit: Woops just had a closer look and the guttering looks more charcoal grey Re: Hey Fu, check out my Little Gem Magnolia…… 79Jan 05, 2012 4:56 am No...gutters and fascia are Mission Brown. This is my reno, and taking some time to do the reno here on my own. They really need replacing, I'm doing the one around the back this year as its worse than all the others. BUT.....when I redo them all I'm using C/B Loft, which is a modern day version of Mission Brown......
