Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 17, 2010 11:05 pm This post is probably best directed to the resident garden gurus, but if anyone has one of these lovely trees I'd love to hear their experience with them My question is, can "coral bark" maples be grown successfully in Perth? I'm researching deciduous trees for a feature tree in my north-facing front garden. The sandy soil is well drained, and I'm planning on planting small shrubs around the base of the tree in a circular garden bed. Being at the foot of the hills (out Midland way) we get quite strong easterlies - the front garden is quite sheltered from these due to my house placement, neighbours placement, and a fence. Fu I promise I've trawled through your many awesome posts on small feature trees (and bookmarked the Water Corp website)! Should the maples prove too delicate for us in Perth then I promise I'll be getting a feijoa (it's evergreen but I can deal with that) Coral Bark Maple - Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 2Apr 17, 2010 11:12 pm vunderful I would love to say that they will do well. I'd have one myself then However they just turn too poo here. The leaf margins will go brown and crispy Then by summers end they are all brown and crispy I do know of a few up in the hills where it is a bit sheltered and I get so jealous of the owners success with them They are the exception though They should OK in a big half wine barrel under the patio and most importantly out of the wind.. Once you get down around South of Mandurah and closer to Bumbury they are easier to grow. Kexkez would have an easy time growing one in her town Wandilla Nursery in Maida Vale has a good selection of them in their shade house. Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 3Apr 17, 2010 11:30 pm Oh BUGGER! That's not what I want to hear Ahh well, I'll admire these lovelies from afar and give up on the maples. My other option apart from a feijoa is to match my council tree and get a Chinese Tallow. I'm a little bit 'over' liquid amber (it's everywhere around the estate) and not interested in crab apples. Some ornamental pear cultivars have caught my attention. The Flemmings site has a few beauties - Pyrus fauriei "Westwood' Korean Sun" caught my eye as it's a bit more compact and small. The tree will be planted in front of the grey rendered area in my avatar so I don't really want a huge, rangey 10m monster hulking over the house Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 4Apr 17, 2010 11:53 pm They might be London plain trees. These are used far more than liquid ambers Have you considered some of the amazingly beautiful WA mallee Eucalypts? Silver Princess or the Coral Gum or the beautiful Snow Queen Neither get very big at all. In fact the Chinese Tallow grows bigger than they do Or be really bold and have a go at the most amazing Eucalypt the macrocarpa which will need shaping but will also become a show stopping small tree. It has the biggest flowers of all Eucs and is another WA species Hakeas also make for great small feature trees. They are shrubs but can easily be under pruned to form a tree shape. Incredible flowers! Claret Ash, Gingko biloba, Prunus nigra, Albizia Tipuana, Macadamia tree (yum) , Zig Zag wattle beautiful weeper , Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 5Apr 18, 2010 12:12 am Ooo fresh meat! Thanks for the suggestions, more research fodder! To be honest, native trees scare me - I grew up in an old suburb full of untended, unloved, scrubby native gardens and the image has stuck fast. My heart belongs to european and south african trees . The Ash looks beautiful, and I didn't know Macadamias would grow down here! Wouldn't it be lovely to have a never-ending nut supply I'm planning on a Tipuana out the back as a shade tree too, love them (though I always used to point them out and say OO LOOK a Mimosa pigra *nod nod*, one day I went up to one and stroked its leaves - when they didn't fold up I went on a mad internet hunt to work out what they were d'oh!!). Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 6Apr 18, 2010 5:34 pm I would select an Albizia julibrissin before a Tipuna. (Over here in the west Tipuana are not a weed problem) They are amazing trees. The native Eucs will out do many ornamental exotic trees for looks. The mallee species I have mentioned (and one Pilbara) will grow smaller and more graceful than other common tree choices Maccas will grow here. Ani's mum has one in her back garden and they are a fav of Peter Coppin from Great Gardens Wonderful feature trees Re: Coral Bark Maple - in Perth? 7Apr 18, 2010 5:47 pm Fu Manchu vunderful I would love to say that they will do well. Sometimes easements are unused and 24cm is not all that much. Good luck. And yes any builder… 2 13774 In Qld it is a requirement that a builder must have a cost breakdown, for building a home to the same specification, with the same inclusions and the same finish. So ask… 1 4350 I am not sure whether Perth has its own way of doing things in regards to this. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13101 |
