Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 05, 2010 12:37 pm It seems that Brisbane and the QLD South East has been hit by a plague of lawn munching monsters that are cutting a swathe through entire neighbourhoods. A little Google searching seems to confirm that it is lawn bug and marching worms that are taking advantage of the lush foliage after the flooding rains. Everything goes from lush green to horrid brown seemingly overnight and people are frantically spraying everything in an effort to stop the invasion. Fu or anyone who can advise, is there something that a person can do to help their lawn to hold on and come back to survive another day?? I am not usually one to spray lots of chemicals and I have happily coexisted with lawn grubs in the past but even I am starting to worry that this latest hit will be the last straw for the green stuff between the garden beds. Are chemical lawn bug killers even a solution or just an expensive placebo?? Will the critters just move on or will the soil be left full of lava waiting dormant for good conditions next year?? Do you advise that the long term care of the soil and patience still be the way to go?? Thanks in advance for your help and Fu I hope all you folks in the west are safe and doing Okay after the big storm. Re: Brisbane lawns being eaten alive 2Apr 05, 2010 5:33 pm We are renting so I was happy to have the little buggers didn't have to mow for weeks, all the magie's had a good feed so I don't like to put poison down. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Brisbane lawns being eaten alive 4Apr 05, 2010 6:38 pm yeah they will be back agian someday. Personally, I'd just put up with it and let them pass. It's not like the lawn will die. It will always come back. lawn Beetle is not a genuine issue on lawns but is a great cop out and cover for other issues like turf fungal diseases or poor watering. There isn't much you can effectivly do even with chemical treatments. You could trial a small area with some Yates Success which is more organically orientated. It has some stuff called Spinosad that should be effective in treating the issue. It will go away on it's own though. Better to spend your money on making the soil better with organic composts raked in and that will make the plant tougher underneath the ground Recovery will be stronger. Seasol, Powerfeed and molasses Be careful with the vinegar. It is also a common ingredient in "natural" weed killers Teatree oil is very commonly used for many things in the garden and used to be in a few products too but they were ahead of their time for people so they are not sold so much anymore Re: Brisbane lawns being eaten alive 5Apr 05, 2010 10:20 pm Thank you Fu, Od and Take2 for you advice. You have confirmed my thoughts. I know they are always there but never caused me much bother before. This week they seem to have arrived in their masses and working so fast you could see the damage creeping up the street. A wormy grass killing flash mob if you like. Just annoying when the rest of the gardens are looking so lush after the rains. Thank you again for your fast responses. My garage door has started playing up recently.
