Someone has mentioned to parge the wall. Im thinking that with a wet load of soil, the back wall of the garage might fall in If someone has some pics they could share of what they have done, i would appreciate it... Any help, or advise would be awesome, thank you! Re: does anyone have... 2Apr 04, 2010 9:55 am How far up the wall will the soil be? If it's only along the bottom edge and below the weepholes/damp course, then no probs. Above that, I have no idea.... I'm sure someone will though. Is there another option? Maybe terracing the area so you have two levels, with a retaining wall set back from the garage? Re: does anyone have... 3Apr 04, 2010 10:44 am scrappinfreak Im thinking that with a wet load of soil, the back wall of the garage might fall in That's probably reasonably unlikely..... However, soil breaching the dampcourse is a no no, as it will give a direct route for moisture and your wall will become damp. . This can be prevented, but it is potentially expensive to get a result you can be truly confident about. Worse than this, though, it will compromise your termite barrier and provide a direct route for termites to enter the house without being seen. So, I would get advice from your pest control expert before contemplating it. Overall, it's probably best to maintain a gap of at least 75mm (with the edge of the slab visible) between any ground surface and the damp proof course. Either way I think this area needs to be filled.. Any advice would be awesome! Thank you Re: does anyone have... 7Apr 24, 2010 5:38 am You need some serious work done, personally would excavate all around house. You need some well designed retaining walls and drainage. Block really should have been cut more originally even if it was an extra. Do not backfill against house. Can you remove more of it (at least from the top) and then do the decking? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: does anyone have... 9Apr 24, 2010 8:49 am Hey scrappinfreak, just had a quite nose through the other pics in your photostream, have you got any retaining walls? That cut is huge at the rear of the house. In regards to your specific question, have you considered putting in a retaining wall for the soil behind the garage, so it won't all disperse on you, then if you want your deck on top you'd need to excavate the dirt level down as it is to allow for ventilation beneath it and aside from that just design the framework so it can span the gap between the garage and the retained section. In this photo it appears the stormwater is suspended under the house. Are you on a slab or other footings....? I was thinking along the same lines as Belial - given the levels, decking might be the best option.
