Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 31, 2010 12:25 pm Hi, I have installed PVC 90mm storm water pipes to draw water from the gutters when it rains. This gets siphoned off into a water tank (7500 liters). I know that these pipes get brittle after some time due to exposure to UV. Is there any coating/spray/paint that could provide the necessary UV resistance ? Ta. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: UV coating for storm water pipes 2Mar 31, 2010 12:52 pm Hi ya, If they are standard 90mm storm water pipes I wouldn't bother. Ours here are 10years+ old. You could just paint them though. Stormwater pipes are normally UPVC (unplastisized pvc) Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: UV coating for storm water pipes 3Mar 31, 2010 5:09 pm Thanks one_artisan, I should have also mentioned, I have a 100 DWV pipe from the brick wall to the tank. This pipe is around 4 meters long. Is this uPVC as well ? Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: UV coating for storm water pipes 5Mar 31, 2010 8:25 pm There are two types of PVC. uPVC stands for unplasticised PVC. Any rigid PVC is uPVC, so all downpipes ar emade of uPVC. Then there is plasticised PVC. This is the flexible stuff. I have seen retic pipes (same stuff) exposed to sun for 15 plus years and still been fine. Re: UV coating for storm water pipes 7Apr 01, 2010 8:56 am Thanks folk, I read an article (very detailed) on various polymers and the effect of harsh Aussie UV on them. The simplist and most effective method for protection from UV for uPVC is to paint them with a water based light coloured acrylic paint. I cant think of a reason why the paint should be light coloured. But am assuming acrylic due to its inherent UV stability?
