Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 24, 2010 9:17 pm hi, Want to get more ideas/ inspiration. I'm thinking what to put at the garden bed at the side of the house. It runs behind the garage to the rear fence, at the south side of the house and about 600mm against the fence. There is a path of about 1.2M between the garden bed and the house. I observed that this area now receives afternoon sun after 4pm. So considered a shading area? Not sure for summer time it will receive longer hours of sunlight? This side is viewable by two bedrms only. Viewing the neigbour's house is not much an issue as the fence is quite enough. I want some contrast with the light foliage plant, tough ones, something won't block the path much. Cordyline and phorinum came to my mind from display but not sure if tough enough for that in summer? Will a small shrub ( less than 2M ) look very odd among the low bordered foliage plants? ( The light ones are in but allowed enough spacing for the prospective plants to go in between) I do wish to use something other than cordy~, phorium, domestica " nana" though I love the red foliage. Thanks v much. Re: What plants do u put at the side of the house? 2Mar 25, 2010 2:12 pm Hi Nott, I've planted Camellias and Gardenias down our side fence (behind garage to rear fence). Ours is to the East but because of the fence and the house they only get sun from about 11am - 3pm daily (when it's high in the sky). They seem to be doing fine so far. It took me a while to realise that for our South boundary it basically receives full sun - because the garden actually faces North, with the fence behind (der ), so if it is on the South side just check how much sun it gets (especially Summer when they are likely to be burned). Plant choice will depend on desired height, sun, soil, foliage/flowers and maintenance. The rest of our garden is almost all Natives, but because this side is only seen from the bathroom, laundry and one bedroom (and around the corner from the main outdoor areas) we (I) figured we could break from the rest of the theme for that area... and I hope the Gardenia produces a nice sweet smell when it flowers.
