Any ideas ? The blades are really skinny compared to the rest of the yard - is the grass stressing ?

Compaction perhaps? The center of my lawn (empire zoysia) also is a bit thiner and needs to be mowed less. I think our dog rolling around there every day is the cause. Im not a reliable source though, Fu where are u? Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 4Mar 22, 2010 10:50 am Mine looks exactly like that when it's dry. Check your sprinklers are getting enough water on that spot. Or maybe it is time for some wetasoil. Earlier than I did, 'cos I now have dead patches in places that never got enough water since it was laid Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 5Mar 22, 2010 11:29 am Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ OTOH, our rotten old kike (in Adelaide hills) is looking pretty lush I keep meaning to read all the info to understand why it's so despised. I know we'll need a lawn edger and we'll have to use the ride-on or tractor mower reasonably frequently and Mrs Z might have some extra weeding in garden beds........ But, what impressed me was the fact that a lot of the abused kike around the house from the previous demolished house has survived the building process and stayed green without ANY water for months over summer. In fact we're happy with anything green....doesn't have to be a manicured lawn. FWIW, half of the green in the pic is instant turf and half is spray-on kike and ryegrass (about 3 weeks old). Both seem fine and are starting to give the look we wanted. Further out from that is just wild paddock grasses overdue for a mow. Hope Fu doesn't come up with lots of valid reasons we've made a terrible mistake. Cheers zeke BTW, should point out that we're doing some work on the dam wall ATM, so it needs some tidying up and grass growing....then when the dam fills, it should look OK with the water about 40 mm from the top of the wall...... Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 6Mar 22, 2010 11:31 am This looks exactly like ours did. When hubby dug a clump out with the mattock under the effected grass it was dry as a bone there, yet not half a meter away the soil was moist and the grass thriving. Sandra By the way I love your land it is stunning! Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 7Mar 31, 2010 11:50 pm Turf fungal disease. The leaves are lacking water and rolling and shrinking. Often turf fungi stop the roots from obtaining water. Lots of regular molasses use will reduce or eliminate this. I know of one golf course that has used it for the control of similar issues. I would be reluctant to use a fungicide on it because they kill all the good stiff too. If you have to though, Mancozeb plus. If it's fungal related, wouldn't more watering create a bigger problem ? BTW Fu....welcome back ..........you've been missed Yep, molasses is on the list! Will be popping out to the Sydney supplier in the next 2 weeks Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 10Apr 01, 2010 9:49 pm Over watering is only one part of the equation for turf fungal diseases. These can be very complicated areas of speciality for turf managers however the basic rundown is warm weather, humidity (natural or man made) soil moisture (related to humidity) available nitrogen. Often when cheaper soils are sourced there is an excess of nitrogen available to the fungus. This isn't always the case though and in new turf the soil can be just like a garden. In the absence of good bugs, it will be the bad ones first on the scene. With soils, in the absence of healthy soil fungus species it is the bad ones who come along first. Feed the soil and forget feeding the plant. Feed the soil microbes and all balances out and ideally the good guys win The soil microbes are the ones who will feed your lawn and other plants Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 13Apr 02, 2010 9:36 am yeah, yeah .....I hear ya! Actually, I'll be getting myself some & for TheMax as well, so it WILL happen Anyone else in the Shire want a drum ? It's $31. The proviso is that you'll have to pick up from me in Como or meet me, themax & bel for coffee & do the exchange then. I meant to mention that right now all the triggers may not be there for this to occur so the lawn will / has recovered but expect it to happen again when they do and some warm weather arrives. Poor advice would be that lawn beetle was the problem ppphhhfft Oh and building your soil into a living unseen ecosystem, will set things up for strong competition for the ugly fungi that become a pain for many easy Feed the soil, never feed the plant. Let the soil feed your plants for you Re: What's wrong with my Empire Zoysia? 15Apr 02, 2010 11:34 am Quote: Use a plastic juice container to scoop it out and into a watering can Sit the bucket on the lawn or in the garden while you are doing this. It does it all on it's own and when you adopt a more intensive copy of that in your garden at home, by geeze you watch what happens. makes you really wake up and think about what we dump into and onto our soils and ultimately into the encvironment and the hideous damage it causes! 2 31355 there is only 20% difference in concrete strength between 20 mpa and 25 mpa, so check with your engineer first if it fits his calculation tolerances.
