Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 16, 2010 8:01 am I have some pear ornamental trees, as do a lot of my neighbours, and they appear to be wind damaged. The leaves have gone crispy brown around the edges as has all my neighbours. It's not too bad but noticeable. And the leaves have appeared to droop a bit. I thought it my have been water stressed but they get water and as most have it I thought it may be wind stress. Also, I have a maple about 9 ft tall next to a fence. Where the fence shields it it is very green and healthy but where it is above the fence (about 3 ft) the same thing has happened to the leaves. What will happen? Will the plant(s) adjust over the seasons or are they the wrong plants in the wrong spot? I mean, wind is everywhere right? Is it just a different environment to where they were in pots (which it is)? Any thoughts? Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 2Mar 16, 2010 9:47 am These trees originate from colder climates with a lot less harsh summers than ours. They hate extreme heat and strong winds, especially hot winds. If you're in a new estate, the problem is exacerbated by the lack of buildings and especially mature trees around you, which provide shelter in more established areas. You should find that as the area becomes more established, with buildings and fences completed and other trees growing around them, the problem lessens. You'll always get some browning off during summer, but the trees will regenerate in Spring and it won't do them any long-term harm. You just have to put up with the unattractive bits for a few weeks/months each year. Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 3Mar 16, 2010 10:24 am I thought that may be the case. Yep, new estate. Wind does get up fairly fast and it does get hot so when the estate gets up and going further it hopefully should reduce Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 4Mar 16, 2010 11:00 am moody, can you post a photo of the leaves? I doubt wind is the factor. If it is, then you can trace the start of the problem back not to the wind but the soil, the types of nutrients used on the trees and also watering patterns. Overall it call comes back to soil health Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 5Mar 16, 2010 11:40 am Will do. I'll post pics tonight. Soil is landscape mix and clay. I mixed them together but the roots may have gone past the mixed layer (about 400mm) Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 6Mar 16, 2010 11:56 am Ooh, I was just thinking that Fu would pop in and tell you that you need to give the poor trees some Seasol, lots of organic mulch, and other goodies. Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 7Mar 16, 2010 12:07 pm On the right track kek Just like with a stressed or sick person, they need some care. They don't want to be pushed further. Care for the soil they grow in and that will take care of the tree for you. With stressed plants, Seasol is extremely good for them. Molasses, heavy mulch (this will create new soil and better soil health) of straws and also or instead of green tree shreddings. Powerfeed also provides some essential organic acids that do some great things. These trees will drop leaves soon anyway but now is the time to start improving the soils health for next year. It won't be a quick fix. It will take time, but ultimately it will provide results you have never seen before I suspect (without seeing the leaf) that it will be a water issue with all the rain you've had. No biggie really Still a great idea to help the soil help the trees for next summer Re: What does wind damage look like? I've seasoled, powerfeed, molasses etc. It's been in for 7 months http://www.flickr.com/photos/41357675@N ... 593427297/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/41357675@N ... 593427297/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/41357675@N ... 593427297/ Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 10Apr 01, 2010 9:33 pm It happens when the moisture leaves the leaf faster than moisture can go in. This is generally not ever an issue. What is an issue are the hundreds of causes often written off to the wind. Salt is a major factor in coastal areas but even then very rare. Re: What does wind damage look like? And how does it work? 11Apr 01, 2010 9:38 pm Get it out of the sun That indicates infrequent watering. So the soil would be wet and then dry then wet then dry. Fix by feeding soil, thicker leaf cells mean less issues. Heavy mulch with uncomposted mulches. These are fresh tree shreddings/mulch, or straws like sugar cane, pea straw or lupin. 100mm thick. One benifit is to even out moisture and temperature extremes. Feed the soil microbes with molasses Get protection for the maples. A bigger tree in there to shelter it. It can also be an indication of future root problems. Also excess salts in the soil or water. Common with grey water systems. Many fertilisers have high salt levels esp liquid fertilisers. This can also be attributed to excess Potassium...or was it Phosphorus? ... Oh crap Anyway It also comes back round to soil health Don't fluff about with chemistry kits of soil pH correctors etc. Just do as has been mentioned so far and all will improve.
