Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 15, 2010 8:16 pm Hi everyone, i'm new around here and looking forward to joining in on the discussions. I have recently bought quite a few yuccas from ebay and have planted them. I just have a question about the leaves. The leaves on mine are sagging a bit, just wondering if this is normal for cuttings and they will straighten themselves up as they grow and get spikey? Or will they always be saggy? I have attached a picture of the ones which I have planted so you can see what i mean! I have also planted quite a few cordyline red sensations! Cheers! Chris. Re: Yuccas - Probably a very simple question about the leave 2Mar 15, 2010 9:05 pm They leaves will turn to absolute poo sometimes. feed the soil they are growing in. What is happening is you have cut it's legs off and told it to go enter a fun run. Those leaves need energy to be kept alive and that requires a root system to do it. As a response to the stress the plant will shed leaves. It won't die, even if all the leaves fall off. It will re-shoot more new ones and maybe even multi branch from around the top where the old bit died off. No fertilisers! Seasol, powerfeed, molasses, heavy mulching with straws and or green tree shreddings / fresh tree waste. That builds the soils living population which in turn allows your plants to live Re: Yuccas - Probably a very simple question about the leave 3Mar 15, 2010 9:09 pm Oh and what you are hoping for them to be are little babies The name Yucca elephantipes refers to the large size of them. "Elephant" It will flower when it gets to about 3 or 4 metres tall. Re: Yuccas - Probably a very simple question about the leave 4Mar 15, 2010 9:11 pm ^ Thanks so much mate, that has to be the best post on the internet! I havent been able to find any info as useful as that anywhere! I've had the yuccas in pots for over a month and when planting - saw that they are now starting to develop roots, so thats good news! I will get some 'food' for them, its weird how they 'thrive on neglect'!? But the leaves that are on there and slightly sagging at the moment, do you think those ones will straighten themselves up over time!? I know its normal for a few to sag, but not all of them. Cheers again for the info! Re: Yuccas - Probably a very simple question about the leave 5Mar 15, 2010 10:41 pm Pretty normal for all of them to sag. Expect them to die off and fold down along the trunk. Then just pluck'em off. That's what is done to them before you buy them in the garden centre These things are going to look like poo for a while. They'll come good. Molasses, seasol, powerfeed, heavy mulching with straws and greener mulches. pity you don't live in WA. You'd have this info on tap Re: Yuccas - Probably a very simple question about the leave 6Mar 16, 2010 8:47 am Yep. I had some of my yuccas leaves go brown at the bottom of the plant and we removed the brown leaves and the whole plant loved it. It appeared to stand up straighter and grew stronger than before and started to regrow straight away. Hi - thanks for your reply.
