Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 11, 2010 12:49 pm We were going to pave it but that is turning out to be $$$$$. Thinking maybe a few pavers and crushed rock. Does anyone have any economical suggestions for the area pictured to the left of the rock wall and up to the path. http://i604.photobucket.com/albums/tt12 ... aryard.jpg Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 2Mar 11, 2010 3:16 pm What about edging with pavers or smooth large rocks & then compacted blue metal? http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsh ... eover/1416 "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. Since you were considering paving, I assume it's for outdoor seating/dining or a dry play area for kids....something like that? There are any number of gravels you could use - just have a look at your local garden supply place and see what they have, but for $50-$70 per m3 you should be able to get something that will suit you. Some pavers set amongst it, either in a path or spaced out in a grid could be cheap too, as long as you don't go for something too up-market. Great suggestions. Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 7Mar 11, 2010 7:19 pm Thanks so much for the replies. We are actually getting the house ready for sale so the idea has to be cheap and quick but effective. We like the idea of using some sort of gravel or stone and maybe some feature pavers or timber. Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 8Mar 11, 2010 9:24 pm when talking about random stone/ pavers in gravel, may I know which goes first? A: Place the paver/ random stone and then the gravel around OR B: Place the gravel and lay the paver/ random stone on top? I think it's B but my husband strongly believe it is A ?! So to cover the edges between pavers in that area, around 60s are needed. How much would that cost for the grass for that area? I always heard " roadbase", so is that crushed rock ( the one lay b4 the concrete poured)? I covered a small portion of the back with topping, so if I want to put some stepping pavers in the future, can I just place them on top or need to clear the topping first? thanks v much Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 12Mar 14, 2010 8:58 am Nott kek, Ur mondos look so cute. So to cover the edges between pavers in that area, around 60s are needed. How much would that cost for the grass for that area? You need to shop around for mondo grass, Nott - Bunnings sometimes have it in trays of ten plants, which work out cheaper than buying individual pots. Can't remember the price....I bought six trays and could still use another one. Individual plants were maybe $2? Must have been about $15 for the tray...I could be wrong though, I've bought so many plants lately. The garden centre on the corner of Yan Yean & Diamond Creek Rds is having a major sale this weekend - maybe they have some? They're advertising "plants at wholesale prices". Nott I always heard " roadbase", so is that crushed rock ( the one lay b4 the concrete poured)? Yep, crushed rock. The grey kind, pretty fine. Any garden supply place will have it. Nott I covered a small portion of the back with topping, so if I want to put some stepping pavers in the future, can I just place them on top or need to clear the topping first? Dig out the toppings, ideally add a layer of sand to bed the pavers into (makes it easier to level them), then pack the toppings back around them. That's how we did the ones in our front path. They've been down for over a year and they haven't moved at all. Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 13Mar 14, 2010 12:24 pm Thanks Kek. The nursery in the corner is Heritage Garden centre. We went there yesterday, the staff were extremely nice and helpful. Some outdoor furniture and stuff are half priced, like outdoor broom, plastic chairs. We don't know which plants are at wholesale price. Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 14Mar 14, 2010 3:48 pm Thanks again. At the moment we are going with Tuscan topping and not too sure but hubby has seen a few broken up concrete slabs about and thought the pieces might look good but might go for some pavers. Still deliberating. Re: HELP cheap suggestions for what to do with this space 15Apr 02, 2010 11:53 am I'd drop in three small feature trees. One or two deciduous and maybe a fruit tree like a pear or cherry. Also a small mallee Eucalypt species like Torquata, ceasia, ficifolia, victrix, erythrocorys. Then you have two that allow summer shade, winter sun. Free mulch too and one that is a fantastic habitat for bees and birds alike. Also provides free mulch Drop a raised bed in and grow veggies there. Why not? Check the trading post for free pavers. There should be heaps of those adds Then you create a space that is cheap, productive and somewhere you will come to want to be in. That is what a landscape is really for To be somewhere you spend time in Relaxing. Like a forest with a simple clearing, a lawn on that clearing and a single chair in it. I guarantee you'd sit and listen and relax there. A functional space, the idea behind every great landscape in the world. Another reason why I dislike boring lawns, mac plants and pebbles. That isn't a landscape, it is a waste 1. Roof cleaning and paint - which colour do you recommend?
