Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 09, 2010 10:40 pm I'm looking for some suggestions to this problem. 3 bedrooms, a study and a bathroom all face the afternoon western sun. We have that side of the house insulated and we also have tinted windows. This side also faces a road-although not busy, I would like to block it out anyway. We're about to move into the house which is situated on 1 acre west of Brisbane. I want some ideas of what to plant along the length of the house to block the sun from getting to the bricks. Space isn't an issue and what I would ultimately like to do is have a tropical/Bali style garden on this side of the house, but for the moment I just need something to block the sun. I have thought about Lilly Pillies however, am not totally sure on these - maintenance is one issue and I don't think it fit in if I ended up doing the tropical garden thing. Another plant I thought of was golden cane palms - however they can look a bit messy if not kept under control. Is there any other neater plant, palms would be preferable but not essential, Cheers Re: Plants to block afternoon western sun 3Mar 10, 2010 8:08 pm We have a side of Golden canes for this purpose and they are fantastic - fast growing and tropical. Do need trimming but easy to do and maintain, create a western block and privacy in a couple of years. They quickly establish the foliage for a tropical setting and then smaller tropicals can be planted below or near. Hi all, We are looking to build a new two storey house in western Sydney.
