Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 42Apr 14, 2010 6:34 pm You won't get it for free anymore. There are too many paying customers now. I was doing a job a few weeks ago and saw some fellas cutting down a few trees. I asked about the mulch but "Na mate got a buyer, nearly always do, I think those days are gone" pay for the mulch. Mulchnet is a WA based business and has only started getting tree businesses onside in other states. You guys in the east will be best calling round the tree guys and rounding up your own mulch at an agreed price with them. You can use mulchnet to get an idea of price. Even if you have heaps left, just put a sign in it and people can help themselves. geeze, a few cubes of black junk mulch will cost more than 5-10 cubes of this gold. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 44Apr 14, 2010 7:28 pm Lissy have you looked at the bush mulch that Aumanns sells? Its on their website. I'm thinking of just getting that and asking to be taken off Taylors list. It really sounded like the mulch might never come. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 45Apr 14, 2010 7:59 pm Ari We are paying for it Fu. They still cant say when/if we will get it. Well that is crap isn't it Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 47Apr 14, 2010 8:19 pm No I haven't phone them yet. Only the Templestowe store has the bush mulch which is probably 30 mins from where we are. South Morang would have been much closer for us but they dont have it. I have an extra 7m3 of organic mulch arriving tomorrow that I have to dig in first. I had 15m3 delivered last week but ran out (i just KNEW I shouldn't have let people talk me out of ordering more at the time). At least if you get it from Aumanns you could start planting now before it gets too cold. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 48Apr 14, 2010 8:29 pm Guys/Gals, Just google and look around. I'm in Melbourne, and I had the same experience with Mulchnet. So I just started calling arborists and tree loppers. Most want to deliver in the local area as they don't want to waste time dumping their load 50kms away - so look in the local papers. I'm in NE Melbourne, which I believe some of the posters live. I got my mulch for $140 for 10m3. This is from the Grey Army Tree service (http://www.greyarmytreeservice.com). Mulch was delivered within a few days - admittedly I was one of their first few customers after the closed their lists for a while! Mulch was good - smelt of pine/Christmas bush type trees that were chopped up. It's going all over the front yard this weekend! slooi1 Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 49Apr 15, 2010 8:27 am Aumanns will deliver for a higher fee i understand, considering the bush mulch is half the cost of the other mulches you still are infront. As i mentioned earlier call bark king they have nearly every type mulch known to mankind and deliver everywhere. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 50Apr 15, 2010 8:37 am I said i was NE Melb in an earlier post but i meant NW oops I will try Bark King Beatrix, they are a long way from us being in Montrose but i iwll give them a call. I will also try the local tree loppers again, haven't had much luck getting through to them so far. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 51Apr 15, 2010 9:27 am Lissy, I pretty sure they supply all of melb. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 52Apr 15, 2010 11:36 am I have seen Don Burke on telly saying these mulches should not be applied very thick however this contradicts what UWA are learning about the use of them. What happens is after initial application the soil microbes are at a very low population in the soil. Fungi take hold and moulds and bacteria begin, along with the fungi, to break this organic material down. Nitrogen draw down occurs, No it doesn't and those claiming this need to re-learn some things about it and what it really is. Something generally only seen in large scale agriculture and not applied to small scale mulching. There is ample nitrogen in this material to provide a nutrient source for the fungi to do their thing. After all it is why it does it So as they take hold and the population grows and it all begins to break down into other substances that other things breakdown further, what happens is waxes form and the organic material appears to remain dry. This can in many cases happen in the surface layer of soil as well as the fungi begin to populate that areas as well. Wonderful stuff This is where the idea that it doesn't allow water to reach the soil comes from. Again however, where does it go? well evaporation is reduced massively, it doesn't get hot like black and composted mulches do, and the surface layer of soil will normally be dry. Go deeper still into the soil and the water repellent waxes allow the moisture to find it's way deeper still. A foot deep, sometimes more The temps are more stable and lazy plant roots grow deeper where the moisture is Come summer, this is a win for you and the water supply Your plants will cope better then the ones next door with pebbles or black mulch. The nutrients created from the breaking down of the mulch is often enough to sustain the plants in a very strong and healthy way. Better than how we traditionally care for the plants in fact As the mulches break down a rich layer of wonderful humus soil forms and you have not only reduced fertiliser dependency and use, you will reduce garden water use by 70%. You will have created new soil Something Australians do pretty poorly, we just take from the soil You will have begun the process of a genuinely low maintenance garden You will have begun to create and reinstate a natural ecology that makes the soil a living thing. Again we have been doing a wonderful job for a very long time of killing that and being dependant on dangerous fungicides and harmful chemicals to maintain as well as pollute our rivers and other waterways. I do like to use straws in winter with higher rainfall and green tree waste in the Spring each year. As long as you have about 10cm of cover this cycle will continue What ever you use for mulch, just don't put on something already composted Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 55Apr 23, 2010 7:04 am For those in Melbourne's north, I found this mob, located at Whittlesea: http://www.treeservices.com.au/recycled_products.php They'll deliver if you want 10 cubic metres, or you can take a trailer and buy whatever smaller amount you need. No idea of price, but I'll be giving them a call in Spring. Actually, next time I'm taking my learner-driver son out that way for some practice, I might call in and have a chat to them. He loves it when I make him stop at nurseries, display homes and the like. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 56Jun 18, 2010 2:17 am kek Actually, next time I'm taking my learner-driver son out that way for some practice, Yeah the footpaths would be pretty clear about then. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 58Jun 19, 2010 9:18 am Fu Manchu kek Actually, next time I'm taking my learner-driver son out that way for some practice, Yeah the footpaths would be pretty clear about then. He's been driving for almost a year and a half now and he's pretty good. Better than 50% of the idiots on the roads around here. I still haven't been up to check the tree lopping mob out though. Better do that soon - I'll want that mulch in a few short months. Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 59Jun 19, 2010 8:32 pm What about the 50% of idiots on the footpath? Re: GREEN MULCH - Fu where are you ?! 60Sep 23, 2010 11:39 pm I ordered 10m3 of mulchnet mulch and spread it around back in Jan. There was enough mulch for 4 of my neighbours to do their front gardens as well. I recently had reason to add some more plants, well bugger me when i raked a section aside the sand underneath was moist black and looking very very healthy. I do have a question tho, and its more about a section that I did not do becuase unfortunetly it had just been "black mulched" just prior to delivery of the green stuff. Anyways the black stuff is absolutley rubbish, especially the fact that it has matted, and the soil underneath has near no moisture. If I was to steel rake all the old black mulch out to throw it away, would the action of raking do any damage to the plants in the garden? They are mostly grasses (i think it may be called Dianella or something) yukkas and a few kangaroo paws. They are all established and have been in for at least 18 months. I know i will never buy black mulch again. cheers Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
